Sadly you are unlikely to find private medical insurance that covers pre existing illnesses.

Hi,

that's not true, you can find cover for existing conditions, it's just costs more.

Further to the previous poster who states there are a million British in Spain, the official numbers from the Spanish registry at the end of 2018 show just over 366,000, while the BBC put the number at 784,900 across the EU from UK official statistics. Doubtless there are more but they are not registered as such do not qualify for any Spanish assistance etc.

Whilst I have every sympathy for those here who will struggle to meet the new requirements and those who wish to come in the future, I doubt the Spanish are going to go shooting themselves in the foot over this. As much as some decisions in the past have been, well downright stupid, to lose the income and revenue that the British ex pats provide isn't an option. Simple mathematics says 400000 x an average spend of 24,000 a year is 9.6 billion Euros

Thank you cathy for yr reply. It’s really picked me up! (Currently sat at breakfast bar, full of aches n pains looking out the window at the crappy, dismal weather lol).

I too have fibromyalgia, and hiatus hernia amongst other medical ailments lol. Which area are you living in? Although of late we were starting to give up on the idea, we’re still toying with options 🤞

My main healthcare cost i am worried about however is that i have familial hypercholesterolaemia basically genetic high cholesterol. I am unable to take statins as they cause severe hepatitis (have been hospitalised twice!). I now have to inject every 2 weeks with ‘Repatha’. These injs are quite expensive and have to be authorised by the ‘top management’ of the hospital here. I do plan to discuss this with my consultant at my next appointment.

Kind regards

Amanda xxx

Have you tried taking Omega-3 oil capsules? In my wife's case, they do as good a job as the statin she used to take, but which had adverse effects.

Hi Amanda

I symphatise with you, and only the millions of people diagnosed with fybromyalgia understand the effect it has on your life.

.I was a registered nurse up until 2017 and manager of a lifestyle team up until March 2018 .

I used to run cholesterol clinics as a practice nurse and can only imagine the frustration you must feel having to have regular injections for raised cholesterol

I would imagine that all three of those conditions would  be classed as pre existing conditions and would not be covered by most insurance companies.(but if you shop around you may find one who will be able to help you)

However  some medications  do seem to be a lot cheaper here than the UK so you may be able get it at reasonable price.

I think the health service here is very good (although I have only used the private  sector through necessity  and not because I could afford it)

You may find a consultant here who might suggest an alternative medication.

On a positive note my fybromyalgia has improved  a lot and I have stopped taking any  pain killers(which I have been on for 25 yrs)

I put it down to sun and a healthier lifestyle.

As you said speak with your own consultant and hopefully he might be able to suggest the way forward.

Once again I wish you luck and really hope you get over here x

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

I beg to differ - having a public pension on its own is not enough, plus the blog post is two years old and contains inaccuracies.

Much better to read the information on this forum.

Interesting topic q & a's. If I moved to Spain prior to the UKs exit and on 31 December 2020 would I be allowed to stay if I have no intention of working and receive £24k a pa from the my home occupational pension? Would I be eligible to receive free medical /hospital treatment if needed?

Thanks

F.

Hello everyone, my name's Amanda. I have read several threads over the last few weeks and you all seem lovely people and extremely helpful.

Myself and my hubby (mark) have made the 'mental decision' we would like to make the move to Spain. I have recently taken early ill health retirement and have a small lump sum to start with. In order to make the permanent move however we would need to sell up in the U.K.  ...

...

We have been doing loads of research on the internet, looking at different areas of Alicante (year round flights) and like the look of Pinoso, La Romana and surrounding areas. We have booked flights out for the beginning of February to have a look around the areas.

Our ideal location/property would be a finca/villa but within walking distance to a Town with amenities.

Our main concern, before we take the plunge, is how much money we would need to be able to live on on a monthly basis. I have a small monthly pension of approx £750.  Would this be able to sustain both of us in the event my husband cannot find work? (he is an electrician).

I take a fair amount of medication (although I'm sure the warmth and healthy living would enable me to knock some on the head!).  We also have 2 dogs (vets?). Trying to factor in all types of expenses.

We would very much like to integrate with the Spanish people and their way of life but, as we're only just starting to learn the language, we'd like the reassurance of English speaking neighbours in the vicinity also.

Anyway, so sorry for the epic, but it would be really great to hear from anyone who can share their advice/experience of already making the move. At the moment we're going round in circles not knowing who to ask for anything.

All comments would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Amanda

HI Amanda

We are just in the middle of selling our house now with a view to move over late spring next year, rent and hopefully buy.  We have tried to budget for everything we can think of and I'm sure we've missed some things but have some contingency.  It is costly to move, fees to sell in UK, transport of possessions is between £4k-£7k and if you want to store them while you rent you then have another monthly charge which can be between £350-£600 per month (all depending on what you have and going  by what I've experienced).  Costs of buying in Spain, they say to allow 10-12% of your property price, on top, to cover all the spanish costs of buying.  We've currently assumed daily living/bills will be the same as UK for now, but we've added in more for being out and about (due to the hope of a more outdoors lifestyle).

I hope you manage to find a way to fulfil your dream.  It is scary.  We just got our NIE certs (using JIm's excellent guide) in the Spanish Consulate in London.  So that is one thing down and got my doggy passport sorted (rabbies blood test tomorrow).

Best of Luck
