I presume that you hold a British passport if you are struggling with the Schengen 90/180 rule.
So to stay longer you will need to become a Spanish resident and the the visa you require is a Non Lucrative Visa.
There’s an excellent guide to everything you need to know here

Hello
What Visa are you hoping to apply for --- do you want to live here in Spain, if so & you have British passports - you would need a Non Lucrative Visa = NLV from the Spanish Embassy in the UK

Hi Enid,
it is relatively easy to track the 90 days in 180 is you use a Schengen calculator - https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/visa-calculator/
It would be better and simpler if it was 180 in 360 days though!
Rgds,
Aitch.

Hi there, we are hoping we can spend October to May in Pinoso. Guess it’s a non lucrative visa with a trip to Edinburgh for us. Thank you everyone for your advice, much appreciated, Enid xx

Yes Brexit has destroyed many a persons dreams and plans of living outside of the UK. I believe that you will need to apply for a non lucrative visa. In order to apply you need €27k for the first person and €7k per person thereafter. Private medical insurance (not sure how that works if retired and S1?) Declare any health issues. If accepted the visa is issued for one year. Then reapply again whilst living in Spain. Then again after two years until five years has passed. Brexit!!!!

You realise that by applying for the NLV you become a Spanish resident, which for the first 5 years restricts the amount of time you spend outside of Spain
Initially it’s just not possible to spend an 8 month block in Spain and a 4 month block outside of Spain.

Applying for and Gaining an NLV is not a way around the 90 day rule and you are virtually committing yourselves to being permanent residents here in Spain and all that goes with it like paying all your taxes on your income to the Spanish tax authorities etc.

"Private medical insurance (not sure how that works if retired and S1?"
You can use the S1 healthcare scheme as your healthcare requirements and full cover instead of having private healthcare.

And there it is again, the claim that an S1 is acceptable as proof of health care for the NLV.
For the n'th time of asking do you, or anyone, have first hand or otherwise verifiable evidence that this so at the TIE appointment?
I'm not talking about what consulates may be doing but what happens on arrival in Spain because that's what counts in the end.
