To become citizens you will need to be legally resident in Spain for 10 years. Also, to gain residency before Dec 31 you will have to prove 3 months of income in a Spanish bank of at least €900 per month and provide details of private health insurance, so if your house is still on the market you might be cutting it fine, as the UK has just entered one of the worst recessions in its history and this may effect property sales. After Dec 31 the information is vague and uncertain as yet, but it looks like you will need to show a higher income or savings in your Spanish bank account.

Check out Jim's guide for first time residency applications , to get more of the finer details regarding the application requirements and process.

First thing is an NIE number Jeff, if you haven’t already got one. The easiest way for me, as I have a business in Spain and the UK, was to find a good solicitor and grant them Power of Attorney. They can then arrange things for you as you go along. As Gerard has said, you will need proof of income. If you are planning to move over permanently, sort you resedencia out first, as who knows what will happen on the 31st of December.

You will be cutting it very fine to complete your house sale and get settled over here in Spain and achieve residency.

To achieve residency you will need to prove that you have enough income to satisfy the authorities you won't become a burden on the state. You would need to show a regular income paid into a Spanish bank account for the last three months of your application. The statements will need to be certified by an official from the bank. You need to be here in person to open a bank account as they will require signatures.

Have you looked into the financial requirements necessary?

You will need to prove that you have full private healthcare cover for yourself and for each member of your family.

You may need to have an NIE to open a bank account and for a rental contract.

There are no child family allowance paid here in Spain and only some individual UK benefits are exportable.

Have you looked into the cost of sending your children to the suitable schools?

After 31st December 2020 the financial requirements necessary for residency will probably increase four-fold.

I urge you to read "Jim's Guides" that can be found in the drop down menu on the left side of this page or the tab at the top of the page. Jim's Guides have all the information you need to know about living here legally in Spain.

You will need to sit a Spanish driving test in order to exchange your licence after the end of this year Jeff .

"UK has just entered one of the worst recessions in its history and this may effect property sales"

Careful with generalisations.

Daughter had house on the market for a year with no offers (price £400,000+)

Days after the government increased the stamp duty threshold to £500,000 she had 7 viewings and 2 offers, contracts exchanged yesterday.

BTW it's 'affect' not 'effect' two very different words.

Sorry for the spelling mistake........I'm dyslexic, so spell checker finds it hard to differentiate between affect and effect unfortunately.

Our solicitors opened the bank account on our behalf. All docs were signed and exchanged by email. We did not have to visit the bank until after we moved here.
