Hi All

I am suffering from a chronic mental illness that has rendered me unable to work. I am on a reduced pension of 250 euros a month.

Am I entitled, as an Irish EU citizen to financial support from the Spanish Authorities? If so how do I go about it and how much would I be entitled to?

Many thanks,

Patrick

As far as I'm aware the Spanish don't have a benefit system. They provide support for people who have paid into the system and it only for a limited time only unlike the UK who gives money to everyone for as long as they want. If you could get the same diagnosis in Ireland you can claim there and stay here but if you get caught doing so you will be in trouble. Can we know what the illness is? I know it's personal so don't feel the need to answer but we might be able to help.

Thats what I said just more information. Only if you have paid into the system for so long or 15years if close to retirement, and it only totals 24months worth of payments. The OP hasn't said if he has worked here and paid his social. And the requirements seem to quite strict.

Is the Spanish state providing your pension? or is this an Irish pension?

How long have you worked in Spain?

The requirements listed in the 1st link

"

  • Not having reached retirement age.
  • Be registered with the Social Security or in a situation assimilated to registration.
  • A minimum period of prior contribution - unless the incapacity is the result of an accident (whether or not work-related) or occupational disease.

In addition to these requirements, each degree of incapacity has specific requirements."

Not sure what you mean by pension and what country is paying it. Here is a link to Citizens Information which might help.

Hi Bee

Thank you so much for your kind reply. It looks like I will be entitled to the same benefits as a Spanish citizen in that link as it says that all EU citizens are entitled to the same benefits as a Spanish citizen.

Please let me know if your interpretation is the same as mine.

Once again so many thanks for taking time to help me with my problem.

Take care

Best wishes

PATRICK
