Hi.  There must be a far few people who have bought a outdoor hot tub / spa.  My darling husband has set his heart on a 5 seater with a 3 kw heater.  I have found out what we need to do to upgrade our current power supply but advice wanted on likely running costs.  My usual electricity bill is 70 to 100 euros per month.  What kind of increase did people find after running a large spa like the one my husband wants. It’s his retirement wish and he is finally retiring at 69.    Thanks.

Ouch! I'd hate to work that one out.

With a 12 kW heater, you'd need to start with separate wiring run through a new circuit breaker, and if there isn't any room in your existing consumer unit for another breaker, then that's more cost involved.

Then there's the significant increase in standing charges, not to mention the cost of an electrician to issue a boletín for the upgrade.

Then there's the cost of actually heating the water. A large hot tub will contain several cubic metres of water and, at this time of year that will be starting at possibly ten degrees and need heating to, say, fifty degrees. There's a calculator you can use to work out how many kWh you would need:

Good luck!

You might end up deciding that your darling husband isn't a darling any more.

Hi

We don’t live here but come out around every six weeks and we have a hot tub left here by the previous owners last year.

I’m not sure exactly how much it costs to run but suffice to say we use it all the time and wouldn’t be without it!

Maybe just bite the bullet and treat yourselves!

After all, you only retire once!

X
