Hi can someone tell me if I buy a property and close in Feb am I liable for council tax for the rest of the year. I thought whoever owned the property in Jan is liable and as its paid the previous oct i could take it as paid until this Oct. My solicitor us asking me for pro-rata payment for council tax
Yes, the person who owns the property on Jan 1st is responsible for council tax for the entire year but it is normal practice for the buyer to pay the unused part of that tax.
The cost would probably be a couple of hundred euros obviously dependent on the type and size of the property. Orihuela Costa is higher than Torrevieja at 0.695% of the cadastral value.

I'm being charged 400 euro even tho on ad for house it says IBI 347

I wouldn't pay it. If you feel you will lose the property if you don't contribute, ask to see the bill and offer to pay the pro rata amount.

My solicitor just got back to say high court agreed few years ago thst it's to be paid pro rata.
