Hi,

Our Son is now in Aguadulce where is teaching at a local School until next June. He has been having great difficulty opening a bank account, which he has now managed to do but he has also been having problems obtaining his NIE card.  He has gone through all the correct channels and has finally received a form with an NIE number on it but no card! When he questioned them as to why he wasn't given a card he was told quite sternly that he isn't a resident in Spain therefore he doesn't get a card.

He knows friends in  different parts of Spain who have had no problems getting there card but that hasn't been the case in Almeria.

Has anyone else found it difficult to obtain there card or is our Son just being unfortunate.

Thanks,

John & Sarah

Hi,

I don't think they actually issue cards to non residents now, I've recently helped three people get there NIE & none of them received a card, just an a4 piece of paper with the number on.

Unless things have changed and I've not spotted it, there isn't an NIE card. As Dazz says, it's just an A4 piece of paper, and that isn't always issued as a hard copy original - it can be emailed to the applicant.

I'd guess that there's some confusion with the residency certificate, which is a card, albeit a flimsy one.

As Jim says it's just a piece of paper with a number which is pretty much yours for life, I doubt you'll find many who've ever been asked to physically produce it though.

Think of it if you will as the Spainish equivalent to an NI number in UK and you don't get a card for that.

Spanish nationals get a card called a DNI but that's a totally different thing.
