Jayne has offered good feedback and advice there. Just one thing to add, which I do not know if it applies to O2, some providers only allow you to be 'roaming' out of the UK for 90days and then have the ability to disconnect your services. I have Vodafone and I have never had an issue with them.

Perhaps another O2 user can post some help, or it may be worth asking in an O2 store before you travel.

All that is based on the current situation of the UK being part of the EU, who knows what may or may not happen, let alone IF!

Hope it helps

Much might depend on which of the 4 core Spanish networks your O2 phone is able to adequately receive at your location.

Even in urban areas coverage can be patchy.

Core players are:

  • Orange.
  • Movistar.
  • Vodafone.
  • Yoigo.
all others piggy back onto one of those.

The main downside to using a U.K sim in Spain is that people in Spain are very reluctant to ring a UK number because of the cost, so you will find yourself in the position that you will not receive return calls from Spanish numbers.

Hi,

Weve just moved out to Spain permanently and were having terrible problems with our mobiles. Run out of data and poor signal. Added to the usual Spanish manana crap, weve still got no internet after over 2 weeks despite being constantly promised it is going to installed! Which also means no TV! Therefore, we needed contact with the outside world, so weve purchased 2 dual sim mobiles. We can now use our UK numbers and our new Spanish numbers in the same phone.

The benefits are you can receive calls from both numbers on the same handset and at the press of a button decide which number you will ring off.

The handsets were Samsung A10s, we paid €119 each. I've got a top of the range Samsung Galaxy S8, cost over £600 and the differences between these new A10s and the S8 is hardly noticeable.

We were also sold 2 Spanish numbers (sims) for only €30 month for both. No contract, and with 10 gig of data, unlimited calls and unlimited texts.

One of the very few things I've been impressed with Spain about!

I have lived in Spain almost constantly for 4 years or more. I have an O2 mobile on pay and go and have never had a jot of trouble with it.

I only use it for calls and it has never been set up for data. I top it up now and again just to keep it active.

It continues to work OK.  If you are a low level user like me Pay and Go is what O2 recommend you should be on. It's on their website.

Hi Jan,

I forgot to mention that I have had several Spanish phones/SIMs and in every case I lost the numbers because I did not use them.

Which usually happened whilst I was back in the UK.

So now I just don't bother with them. I have email and a landline number which is a VOIP line through the internet. Much, much cheaper than a normal wired landline. It still uses normal land line numbers.

Happy dialling.
