Your fine. Your expiry is 10 years from date of issue. So you passport will expire on 23rd May 2023 so no issue.

Not so quick, the expiry date needs to be at least 3 months after your expected date of departure.

Hi Andrew,

From the Gov.uk website:

"Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)"

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain/entry-requirements

As your passport was issued on 23 May 2013, its actual expiry date is 23 May 2023 and you need to have 3 months' validity remaining on the day you leave Spain, i.e. no later than 23 February 2023.  So I'd recommend applying for a new passport as soon as you get back from Spain this summer 😉
Kind regards, Kim

If Andrew is returning on the 30th June I make that 9 months until his expiry date. So as I said he will be fine.

Hi Kim

Just thought I,d add my recent telephone call to Passport Office experience. My passport was issued May 2013, Exp Sept 2023, so I knew I would have to renew as soon as I returned from my next visit from August to November to enable me to have new passport for next March. However on reading all these rejections and cancelled flights etc, I telephoned them as accepting my passport would really expire March 2023 still was 3 and a half months after my return. I was stunned when told I should renew it now not next year as some Spanish officers were demanding 6 months after returning so I could be refused my travel (Brit Ferries). When I stated your gov. UK website advises 3months left on passport she said yes that's what we advise but the EU officers are a law unto themselves and if you want peace of mind renew it now. So effectively I,m losing out on 9months of use and it means I will be very anxious waiting 10weeks to August to receive it back in time. She guaranteed no application would take longer than 10wks but I could always fast track it. Just another money grabbing venture I could do without.

Regards

Pauline

Thanks Pauline.  I've heard reports of some airlines refusing boarding unless you have 6 months left on your passport too.  But both the airlines and the border guards are wrong.  Spain's own government website states validity of 3 months, not 6, from date of leaving Spain:

https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/londres/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Condiciones-de-entrada-en-Espana.aspx

If I were you, I'd print off those conditions and carry it with you when you travel to Spain.

Kind regards,

Kim
