I saw something on FB earlier - apparently reporting from a speech by Spain's prime minister.

Reported as, and I paraphrase, Spain not welcoming international tourism until the end of summer 2021.

It's linked to them wanting to see 70% of Spain's people vaccinated before welcoming international tourism.

I'm waiting for something from the UK's ambassador in Spain to confirm or the UK foreign office. It might not turn out to be a complete "tap off".

The way things are going I think No Holidays this year. Spain now have shut down bars and Restaurant's just like here in the UK. This is encouraging house parties and the virus spreads faster. I have seen people coming and going bringing boxes of beer and wine and then party time. It is not good for us people staying home like we should as the virus level is up and down like in Spain. We are stuck in again for I do not know how long. Madness .

A report from The Telegraph this afternoon, refutes previous reports about Spain being closed to holiday makers:

Thanks - I've read this a few times now and my gut feeling is that future travel may be linked to a/ a vaccination certificate b/ a clear covid test before travel c/ a set level of in country covid cases d/ quarantine after arrival. Or as the tourist minister says "a framework". Once the details of this framework emerge we'll know the rules of the game.

That said if most folk don't receive vaccinations here in Spain until the autumn people will feel very vulnerable.

Tough times and mixed emotions.

I don't disagree with your assessment, Lancelot, although what Spain decides may have little bearing on the travel of people from the UK, if the announcements from BoJo and the chief medical/scientific advisors yesterday about the new variants are anything to go by:

Early days yet as the crib sheet is defined, a new report from today and no doubt a new one tomorrow ;)

I don't know if anyone watched the update last night on BBC1 but it is worth watching to hear Patrick Vallance on the covid strains and Chris Whitty on the UK vaccine strategy.  It's on iPlayer so not visible to all in Spain  Their views came across a lot less doom and gloom than you read in the media.

On the increased mortality rate, it was stressed by Vallance that the data they have is not yet conclusive, but if he was saying 30% more deaths with the new strain I imagine it is close to confirmed.

Aitch.

Thanks Lancelot, but given the issues with the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, published yesterday, I think Spain's ability to vaccinate 70% of the population by the summer could be in serious doubt:

https://www.ft.com/content/3dbfe495-5947-4dd0-9f43-5edc5e6d6dc7

Fortunately, the EU approved the Moderna vaccine in December and the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine at the beginning of this month, but there's no doubt that the Oxford/AstraZeneca issues are going to have a serious impact on achieving the full vaccination programmes in the original timescale.

Kind regards,

Kim
