The law regulating Sundays and bank holidays on which shops and shopping centres in the Valencia region can open was dramatically changed on Wednesday by the regional government.

The agreement is a serious setback for shops and shopping centres in Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Finestrat and coastal districts of Pilar de la Horadada, Benissa and Alfás del Pi, which had been allowed to open every Sunday and bank holiday all year because they were awarded the status of busy tourist zones (ZGAT) .

Yes, the full details are on the front page of this week's Costa Blanca News. The new law starts 25th Feb. This rule applies on Sunday's from 6th January to 14th June. It will be a huge change for La Zenia Boulevard, as only the cafe's and bars will be open. It seems crazy with all the house building going on around here. If anyone arrives on a Saturday night, they won't be able to buy milk, bread etc. It's a bad idea for business and must have a negative effect on workers' pay and jobs.

Oh well, they call it progress, I suppose!

Basically, the change means that instead of being able to open 63 Sundays and red days, the number permitted will reduce to 38. There are some qualifications to this, with some days being forbidden, and some being specified by date. There's even a difference between areas classed as tourist and those that won't.

As far as I'm aware, the change hasn't yet been published in the official diary of the Generalitat, but this may be in the next few days.

In the meantime, the newspaper article does list the areas it applies to, and the exception dates.

Funnily enough i remember a life were NO shops opened on a Sunday, in Wales that included pubs as well. We managed to survive!! and i'm sure we will survive limited closures here in Spain too. In the grand scale of things not really an issue....is it?

Hi Roy

I too remember the dark days when shops were closed. One Sunday in the 70's, I went to a corner shop to buy cooking sherry and was refused because it was alcohol. Also greeting cards were not allowed to be sold. It seems very strange that they want to return to those days. I feel sorry for any workers who will lose money because of this. It's not a problem for us pensioners who have all the time in the world to shop. It would be interesting to hear from any shop staff, for and against the new law.

My daughters called the "dark days" the black and white days lol. I aways felt if you can't do your shopping in 6 days and keep the seventh day for relaxation and families then you have a very busy or dis -organised life indeed.

Oh dear.  I'm flying out next time on a Sunday morning and will need to get some bits and pieces as the cupboard will be bare!

A stupid change to the law. You would think in a struggling economy the extra tax revenue would be welcome. Oh well, a step towards the marraige of church and state.

I'm not old but maybe I'm being a bit old fashioned. I used to love going down to London and walking round on a Sunday. It was a great way to see the city. Now it's just people and traffic obscuring the wonderful things people no longer notice.  In a world that's so hectic, busy and stressful, I think it's good that there is a day where everyone can relax and focus on friends and family and not on shopping for yet more things.  Last Sunday we went out as a family with our dog and had a great time reconnecting with each other.  24/7 life is not good for anyone. As for workers, many have children and don't see them as much. They got days off during the week in lieu of weekend work when their families are at work or at school so they miss out (I've done weekend work and it's so disruptive to family life).  Sunday for me isn't a "church" day but we all need to stop and recharge, and take stock on what we already had instead of what we can get at the shopping centre. Plus its only a reduction of 25 days from 63 to 38 so still 38 Sundays and red days you can shop on. Just my personal opinion - hopefully I haven't caused offense.
