Hi all myself and my hubbie are planning to move to Spain next year from ireland (S). Will be retiring.  We plan to sell our home here.  I have recently been diagnosed with early onset dementia,  feel fine atm TG.  I have been advised to go ahead with our plans as the stress I have here won't be there and will help along with the sunshine and lifestyle as I have spinal issues and arthritis.  I am fairly fit considering and our home in PF is my happy place. I need to look to future should I need it.  What is the situation with care homes  if needed.  Pretty morbid topic i know on this dark cold day in Dublin  thank you

Public care intstitutions are overcrowded and have a long long waiting list. Private homes are expensive and you willl not feel well - I can tell that from my father in Law. Better forget the whole thing. Sorry to say this.

Spanish care homes are very expensive and don't really cater for foreign people. Everything is geared up for Spanish people. I know someone who spent a short while in a care home and he said that the food was always "Spanish Style" He hardly ate anything for 3 weeks, there was no alternative menu.

I think your plans may need reconsideration.

There are possibilities in Spain, depending on resources, personal and financial.
There are support groups for alzheimer families also in Spain. I recommend  that you contact an alzheimer association for legal and practical advice as well.

Not everyone reads, or wants private messages. If you do I can share with you some of what I've learned about the care possibilities here there.

Some links that might be useful:

I would recommend for you to try, before you make your final decisions. To live in Spain you will experience the climate in full. The heat and cold. If you like comfortable temperature, you will rely on air-conditioning /heating.Well build accomodation comes with high cost. Some health conditions may get worse with the dust, humidity. If you are running from stress, don't expect to live it all behind. If you don't speak Spanish, you will face situations like visiting a doctor, when you need to come with your translator. Spain is a spanish speaking country. We moved to Spain in our early fiftys and I feel, any later would be a  struggle to get used to the " life in a sun".

Please think carefully about your decision, I don’t have your health problems and find the stress of living in Spain just the same as living in the UK, not the laid back life everyone thinks it is.

Dealing with bureaucracy in Spain can be a nightmare. A Spanish neighbour of ours had to go into a care home for a couple of months the cost was €2500 per month. Before that he was in Torrevieja hospital which according to another neighbour who visited them in hospital " it was like the Crimea" private rooms which would have had just one patient in now has 3 or 4 patients all mixed.

Thank you all for all the responses. We have spent time in spsin in all seasons and yes July n August can be tough.  each time we are there I am a completely different person endorphins are buzzing. We made many friends in a short space of time.  We don't have that here. Staying here will speed up everything I know that. My hubbie is my rock wherever I am.. luckily I have a good pension at the moment which would cover   care home costs if needed. My doc etc feels we should go for it as ee won't know how long this could take  could last 10 or 20 years before developing any further abd the lifestyle would help to prolong it.  Something else could kill me first. Worst case scenario we move back. We already own our home on spain and would have proceeds from sale here for back up.  Yes it's a risk I am aware of that but as I'm only 61 and have as my hubbie says 40 happy years together already. He feels if we have 10 more good ones thsts good enough. I just fear for him and want to knkw he can get support.
