Travel Insurance

Hi, we have a property in Spain where we visit regularly, sometimes staying about 8 weeks at a time.

- we have EHIC medical card which give us access to medical treatment in Spain.

- we thought it would be a good idea also to have "TRAVEL INSURANCE" which will

include "repatriation".

- the problem with this travel insurance is - It only allows "Up to 31 days." at one time.

Has anybody got any advice? Sometimes we only stay for 2 weeks.

(I was trying to buy an annual policy).

You are correct, most basic annual travel insurance is as you say 31 days, you can upgrade to a longer period such as 45 days, or even longer. But then it gets quite expensive by comparison. I would suggest you try and stay within the 31 days each trip. Let’s be honest, it’s based on the requirements for average holiday makers and most will not be away on holiday for more than a month at a time. If you own a holiday home and intend staying away for a couple of months or more at a time, that’s a different category. Normally 31 days is adequate for most people. It’s also down to risk analysis carried out by the insurance companies.

Have a look at lv, we have yearly multi trip insurance cover which gives you a maximum of 90 days.

You should never have been travelling without travel insurance. EHIC or GHIC only covers emergency treatment.

With an EHIC or GHIC you can get emergency or necessary medical care for the same cost as a resident in the country you’re visiting. This means that you can get healthcare at a reduced cost or for free.

An EHIC or GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance – it does not cover everything, such as mountain rescue or being flown back to the UK (medical repatriation). Make sure you have both before you travel.
