So pleased that I found this forum.  My name is Carol and I live at Loch Lomond in Scotland.

I have been thinking of buying a place in Spain for years now.  My husband and I had bought in Florida, which we both loved and I still have a home there, however as my husband died very suddenly a few years ago, I thought I might like prefer to buy in Spain.

I plan on visiting Playa Flamenca for a few weeks at end of August with a view to getting to know the area.  I am looking for advice on where is suitable to rent and to find out if there are any clubs/activities that I could go to on my own.

Would appreciate any advice as it's all a bit daunting right now.......

thanks,

Carol.

playa flamenca is a lovely area, we have just bought an apartment in La florida which is just next to it.  You will find all sorts of groups and there are a lot of people who are on there own.

I know the Emerald Isle have coffee mornings on every week also they do have exercise classes 3 times a week.

if you look in the free papers you will find more.

Take a trip to Campo Verde when you are here. It is a lovely village to live in permanently with plenty expats around but still with the Spanish feel.

Hello carol so very sorry to here about your bereveament .... I got married late in life my family came from the outer Hebrides .... I moved to giffnock in Glasgow... To cut a long story short my husband and I came here to Playa Flamenca a year ago we have 5 beaches within 5 to 10 minutes and a large shopping mal la zenia built 5 years ago so we have the best of both worlds ... There are quiz nights where lots of singles are her or we go to the auctions car boot sales markets there is plenty to do ... I have never regretted it and no one else with whom I have spoken to has .... The Spanish love their paperwork so I would suggest you get a good jestor pronounced hestor who knows their way around the Spanish system and won’t charge you the earth ....Another tip is don’t come July or August it’s to hot and the Spanish all come from Madrid and no one is working 🤷‍♀️

Welcome to spain carol 😎

Hi Carol, I am retired and just moved here 3 weeks ago from Ayrshire. It is very hot but I have been busy trying to get my little 2 bed bungalow in order. Yes, lots of paperwork to get through. I am in Los Altos but can walk to The Emerald Isle, have only been there once so far. I am divorced but look on this move as my next adventure.

Hi Carol, I am from Glasgow (taught in Govan High for 16 years) but lived for 18 years in Aberdeen before moving here almost 3 yrs ago.  We spent many happy days in the Loch Lomond area.  Moving to Spain was the best things we did - sure you will miss friends and family but with cheap flights (9.99 euros last February) you can easily  be back with them for quality time and making new friends is not too difficult.  As an asthma sufferer my health has improved dramatically and I have nothing but praise for Spanish NHS (it is totally free if you receive a UK state pension).  The weather is a huge factor as when the sun is shining everyone seems happier.  If you ever feel nostalgic about Scottish winter days in front of the fire, a quick trip home to grey skies and drizzling rain brings you back to earth again.  We live in Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, just 10 minutes from the airport and very cosmopolitan with a good mixture of nationalities.  Elche and Alicante are just a short distance away.  If you have not definitely decided on where to stay it is worth having a look.  Hope you enjoy your new life in Spain.

Hi Carol, you certainly have had plenty of replies. However I feel that I must speak up for Torre de la Horadada. In my opinion this is without doubt the best area to think of retiring to.It has  everything one needs within easy reach. Even the main town of Pilar de la Horadada is just a short drive away. The sea is no more than a ten or fifteen minute walk away. However it is a popular holiday resort for the Spanish but only for the month of August, the rest of the year it is all ours. My wife and I bought here to retire 18 years ago, we never once regreted it. Sadly my wife passed away last year but this is my home and I would never concider going back to the UK. By the way there are plenty of things in the area such as clubs and other general activities. I would be very happy to help you in any way I can. Len.

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to reply to my post.  Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful and I really do appreciate the advice and tips.

Have to say that I am really keen to get started looking around the area.  I am hoping that I will be able to get over for a few weeks at end of August into September.

Thanks again and best wishes,

Carol.
