Playa Flamenca or La Zenia are both great areas where it is possible to get good properties near local Bars, Restaurants and the Beaches whereas close to Cabo Roig Strip can be very noisy particularly in the High Season. Renting is a good option but be very careful to make sure that the rental property has it's Licence as heavy fines can be imposed on both owners and renters of unlicensed properties.

Sorry, I reread your original post and saw you are looking for "all year round" rental, in that case the Tourist Licence is not required.

That might be a problem as unemployment is high, where work is available it is likely to be Seasonal low paid jobs with little or no employment rights, being Spanish speaking would be a bonus, if you have a trade then registering as Autonomo ( self employed ) and with INSS for Tax etc is essential unless you want to join the hoard of Brits living and working illegally cash in hand. I do not want to be negative but a lot to consider, we are lucky that although Sate Pension age we took early retirement and love our life in Spain. Good Luck.
