Hi all

Just out of general curiosity

apart from this website is there any other forums in the area that are not dominated by adverts but are more aimed at self help/support groups

Good morning to you Grahame...Please believe me, when I say that I am definitely NOT a 'fan' of advertising also!

But in order to provide the readers/contributors here on this Forum, with 'one-to-one' extremely valuble 'information', then it is sometimes necessary.

The efforts of the team behind this, are second to none, it is a 'full-time' presentation exercise, which obviously takes a LOT of time and preparation, and to carry out this, the team DO need to earn a living. I just wish that I was clever enough to design and put this out on the airwaves.

Please try and understand, that if this Forum WASN'T here, then it would be a 'sad' state of affairs.

These various Forums are creating an EXCELLENT 'community', where we are all like one big family, and I ought to know, I DON'T have ANY family, it is my principle method of contact to the 'outside world' Thank you for your comment and enquiry...Have a good week...🅱️.

Hi Grahame,

I agree about the adverts.  Perhaps the administrators could consider a subscription service that allows us to opt out of seeing them 🤔

In terms of self-help groups, you may find what you're looking for by contacting one of the regional charities, like Help Vega Baja:

Best wishes

I hear what you're saying.

With certain elements treating it is their own virtual car boot sale and the pox of links to spurious and largely irrelvent news articles aimed only at monetizing the route the forum is taking is not a good one.

It would be a shame if people are put off using it because of it.

In spite of the adverts, without which we probably wouldn't have a forum as good as this one, they don't annoy me in the slightest - I'm very good at ignoring things, as Margaret would tell you.

There are lots of expat forums, but they aren't anywhere near as active or comprehensive as this one. In addition most of them are full of poor or totally inaccurate advice. The only other forum I like is another one of Jan's - Talk Quesada.

I agree with Kim about Help Vega Baja. They're a worthy cause and we've been members for some time.

In general I don't mind the adverts but lately there have been a few occasions where individuals have been selling up their homes with a plethora of large images and a long series of adverts.

It does get wearing scrolling through them all.

Maybe it would be possible for thumbnail images to appear on the initial page and the full image to open up when clicked on?

To address a few points:

  • The adverts help keep the forum running. We try to make sure they do not stop people using the website, for example if you go on some news websites there are so many it makes it unusable! We have thought about a subscription service for members to pay a small monthly fee to turn off all adverts (except the adverts in the right hand column) - would members be interested in this? It's not something we are sure of ourselves as we don't want people to think they have to pay to use the forums.
  • Every day we posts 5-10 local news items in the News forums. We have seen some members say they like these and some do not. We can turn them off from appearing in the "Latest posts" section if you want?

I don't know if we are at cross purposes here.

The adverts which annoy me are the sometimes long list of items for sale by forum members.

Not so much the number, but the large for sale photos which are part of the initial page of Latest Posts. It would be useful if they were small images which opened up when clicked.

The other commercial adverts on the page don't particularly annoy me as they are part and parcel of any free website.

Turning off the news items on Latest Posts would be useful as well and just having them in their own section.
