I personally think that €177 per annum is reasonable. It might be worth paying your solicitor to sort out everything you need to pay and to get up to date with regular payment dates.

If you get your non-lucrative visa you will have one month to apply for residency. If you get residency you can then change from non resident taxes to resident tax and also change your bank account to a resident account.

When you are fully settled and know your Outgoings and dates you could set up direct debits thus avoiding having to pay for a solicitor. A Gestor is cheaper than a Solicitor if you can find one you are confident with.

A "Wise" account is free and you can set up an account with them to pay direct debits.

Hi Helen,

Have you completed the purchase of your property? If so, you will be liable to pay Non Resident Tax on it, pro-rata for the remainder of the current tax year.  You don't need a lawyer to do this - a competent gestor can do so and it will be much cheaper than a lawyer's hourly rate.  Alternatively, as you've returned to the UK, I would recommend you contact this company to complete the Modelo 210 for you - £34.95 per property (not per owner) and an additional £12 to make the payment on your behalf if you're not in Spain to pay it at the bank:

https://www.spanishtaxforms.co.uk/

As part of the completion process, your lawyer should have arranged for your utility bills (electricity, water and gas if supplied) to be transferred from the vendor to your name, and also your local tax bills, payble to SUMA collection agency, i.e. IBI (council tax) and Basura (refuse collection).  These are one-off instructions, so you don't need to be paying an annual fee to a lawyer for them - they can be paid by direct debit from your Spanish or EU bank account.  Similarly, a Will is probably a one-off, or very occasional, requirement and can be done for a lot less than €177 at a local Notary.

Kind regards,

Kim

Your non-resident tax for the current tax year, ending on 31st December, doesn’t need to be paid until late 2023, as the process is that you pay the yearly tax nearly 12 months later
