We're on the 3.3Kw tarrif for electricity. If we switch on the oven all the power goes off even if the oven is the only thing using power. What's strange is, it's not the breaker for the oven circuit that trips, it's the main breaker which kills everything.

I assume you should be able to run an oven on the 3.3kw tarrif or are we overdrawing the supply. The cooking rings are no problem.

Could be a faulty oven, faulty wiring, faulty breaker too. Just trying to get a bit info before calling someone.

I've checked the plug and the junction boxes and don't see anything obvious.

Craig, If as you state you have tested the plug on the oven then one thing you can try yourself is to try running an extension lead over to it from another socket outlet. Plug in the oven to the extension lead and if the circuit breaker once again trips then it's very likely, although not 100% certainty,  to be the oven rather than the household Electrics at fault .

The insulation properties on heating elements including Oven elements can deteriorate with age and will trip either the circuit protective device or the Earth Leakage device , both sited  at the fuse box , protecting users from potential harm.

Thanks Pete, it's not the stand alone breaker at the right hand side that's tripping. Is that the one that dictates our tarrif (it says 15A)?

The one that's tripping is as you say the one with the test button it says 25/2 RCCB and in tiny print 25A

Thanks LeckyLes,

It's not possible to plug into an extension cable as it's got a special cooker plug fitted.

RCCB means Residual Current Circuit Breaker - in other words an earth leakage breaker - so it seems that there is an earth leak in the oven.

I had that when I moved into my apartment. Electrician said it was dampness from cooker sitting idle. He disabled the trip switch (don’t know how, but it was straightforward), ran the oven for an hour, which he said dried it out and sorted it. Maybe not your problem, but who knows.

Without further tests Craig it Looks likely a duff element in your oven , which would produce a leakage of Electricity to earth at your installation in excess of the rated tipping current of your ELCB. Usually 30mAmps.

A new element may sort it, but you need to weigh up the chances of it being that or another internal fault, against the cost of a replacement oven.

James, disabling that Safety trip switch even for a short period of time was a very dangerous thing to do. All seems to have worked out fine for you but I most certainly do not recommend that.

My next door neighbour was able to replace his element for 24 euros cost of element last year but choice is yours  Craig.

Thanks everyone....it certainly all points to an oven fault.

The hob is connected to the oven and is controlled by the dials on the front of the oven. Are these connections and the plastic "fingers" that control the hob universal? Probably best to replace both but just wondering.
