Hi all. I hate air con and am looking for advice about the best fans or devices to use to help us keep cool. I would appreciate any relevant info.

Thanks.

Have a look of this below. (link)

The only problem with an ordinary fan, although cooling, the motor which drives it creates heat.

I have just "acquired" it, & so have not gone through the summer with it as yet. Worth a look at reviews.

Hope helps.

It´s getting warmer by the day!

I have a similar unit to the one in the link, which works along the same principles. It is difficult to get a cool, comfortable temp as the water in the holding tank, which is used to cool the air being expelled via the fan, soon warms up to room temp and subsequently the air being blown into the room becomes warmer too. They are not really suitable for a long running time due to the above.

One way to get quicker cool air into the room is to load a quantity of ice cubes into the water tank before filling with water, this will extend the cooling period for a while until the ice has melted and the water warms up to room temp

Thank you for sharing your experiences re cooling devices. Much appreciated.  After reading all the comments I think we’re going to stick with fans.

I can understand the point of view of the OP, but I do think that one's experience of an aircon unit depends on what type it is.

Because of all the plastic in their construction, the output air is often positively ionised, which can lead to headaches for those sensitive to pos-ions. The principal aircon in our living room has a built-in ioniser, and the output airflow from this is a refreshing as a breeze outside the house.

Some people also criticise aircons for drying the air and giving them sore throats. All our aircon units have drying as an option. I prefer that option, as the lower the humidity in a room, the less heat or cold the air in that room can contain, and the easier it is to control. However, if we have visitors who don't like dry air, I run the aircons without the drying option.

Thanks for your advice.  Interesting facts to note.
