Hi Neal I’ve had the same fridge freezer since 2006 and I turn it off every time I leave my apartment. There’s so much to think about when you first buy your holiday home, if there’s one piece of advice that I can give you (assuming that you haven’t already thought about it) turn your wat...

Enjoy your time in Spain.

Hi

Thanks for your reply .

It just seems pointless paying for electricity for a couple of months when we are back on the UK, especially when it’s empty

We were advised by the supplier that it isn’t good to switch it on and off

I guess we will have to toss  a coin 😇

["We were advised by the supplier that it isn’t good to switch it on and off"]

I am no expert regarding "fridges", But is a refrigerator not designed to be switched on & off regularly/daily by it´s own thermostat?

Hello

Lots of good advice Neal.... I live here but have keys to 3 apts in my urbanisation that  are Scandinavian owned holiday homes.

All of them switch electricity off completely when they leave - it does seem pointless not to.

Cheers

If you can, turn the water off too. if you get a leak the bill for the water alone can be eye watering.

Hi,

We have just bought a new apartment which initially we are using as a holiday home.

Just wondering if others switch appliances off ( fridge / freezer ) if the property isn’t going to be occupied for long periods

Thanks

Neal

Hi. I am going to say the opposite. We have a holiday home and leave ours on all the time. We leave the fridge freezer on and our Wi-Fi so we can watch our security cameras from home. Our electricity bills average 32€ / month which most of is standard charges rather than usage so it isn’t a lot to make sure we have some food if we get there late on a Saturday with no shops open on a Sunday. Works for us.

Slightly "tongue-in-cheek", but I can see the point.

If there is a prolonged power cut & the wi-fi/security cameras cut out, then one will not have to "watch" the foodstuff perish in the fridge/freezer.

Hi, we switch electricity and water off every time we leave our holiday apartment

It’s best and safest thing to do ( need a frost free freezer) and try and use up most/ everything food wise before you do and leave the fridge/freezer doors open

Hi Neal,

you can see by the various answers that it is a matter of personal choice. We sometimes switch the fridge/freezer off, sometimes leave it on, it depends what is still in the freezer and how long it is until we go back. We do the same in the UK also as we have 2 fridge/freezers and generally consolidate the contents into one. Again, not every time.

We have never had any fridge/freezer failures in either Spain or the UK.

Aitch.

Evidently a good tip if you are leaving the freezer on with contents is to place a small object on to the top of the frozen ice cube mold and if there is a prolonged power cut the water will melt and the object will sink

Good idea, had a friend who didn't. She received a water bill for 3 months, total just over €900! Had a leak that had gone unnoticed.
