We turn power off at the mains and also turn water off. Leave doors ajar and hope for the best.

Agree David, I use a egg cup filled with water and freeze it. Before I come back to the uk I turn it upside down so I know when I get back if it has melted the freezer has been off for a prolonged period. I just keep enough in the freezer to get by for a few days when we arrive if required.

Slightly "tongue-in-cheek", but I can see the point.

If there is a prolonged power cut & the wi-fi/security cameras cut out, then one will not have to "watch" the foodstuff perish in the fridge/freezer.

No comment required.

Even if I was there and the was a power cut for a prolonged period there would be nothing I could do anyway so it doesn’t make any difference.

Hi Neal,

The short answer is yes. Why pay for something your not using.

We have a holiday home and switch the electric off at the mains when we leave.

Definitely switch it off. We left frozen food in ours had a Powercut which are quite frequent where we are and came back to food we had to throw away.

So what do you do if you have a power cut whilst you are there? Going on that theory you would never be able to put anything in any freezer. If the power goes off and you are there or not there is not much you can do about it.

Just a thought, but if you're there I suppose you could cook and eat it over the next few days or give it away to friends/neighbours or even ask someone you know to pop it into their freezer?

Hi,

We have just bought a new apartment which initially we are using as a holiday home.

Just wondering if others switch appliances off ( fridge / freezer ) if the property isn’t going to be occupied for long periods

Thanks

Neal

Yes don't forget to clean it well and leave the doors open.👍

Hi

Thanks so much. I probably stated the obvious.

So many new things and questions

We just need to settle in and enjoy

Best wishes

Neal

I would turn off electricity and water as I learnt to my misfortune having had a flood during Covid lockdown which ruined the whole house including furniture.  Make sure you have insurance too as this was the best bit of the nightmare as they covered everything.
