We have lived in Spain for some 15 years, have always rented a property always looked after it and have never missed a rent payment in all that time.   In recent times we have begun to encounter a certain intellectual sub class of property owner who use the term "renter" as a derogatory term.     Can anyone suggest why such people should think they are in any way superior just because they own a property which may well have been paid for from unearned income such as inheritance or even the proceeds of a deceased spouse life policy.

No disrespect to the many people who have purchased property through their own hard work.

I’ve only ever encountered this attitude from Brits and probably stems from the days of large council estates and the desire for many to move away from that.I think Thatch encouraged people to look down on social housing so that you end up with today’s situation in the UK where the provision of social housing is dire.I have friend from other European countries that don’t seem to have the same attitude. These are my observations,I could be wrong.

You could well be right, Thatcher really was responsible for a lot of what is wrong in Britain today and when I think about the nastier Brits with attitude over here they are largely from the generation who would have elected her.  What a legacy !.

Off topic in know but does anyone remember the National Front tv party political broadcasts in the 70s UK?I mention it just because as an observer it would look to an outsider that they’ve actually taken power in the UK.Always seen with a Union Flag, kicking out foreigners to Africa, isolating from Europe,it really is quite surreal.

The Queen rents Buckingham Palace and all the other properties her family live in.

The Prime Ministers various abodes are all rented.

Most of the apartments in Belgravia etc are rented on a fixed term contract.

Freehold property ownership is in fact very rare outside the UK.

Absolutely right but how do we get this through their thick snobbish heads.  I find the worst snobs are the ones who have achieved little or nothing themselves but contrive to look down on others.

We rent our property out long term and a good renter is a landlords dream , I can’t think why anyone would look down on them.

I was a home owner all my adult life in the UK but when I moved to Spain I decided long ago that I wanted to rent. Each to their own....

Absolutely correct! She basically killed our natural British reserve and kindness for others. Brought in typical American greed, and disrespect for social manners! Brought us in line with a few of our European counterparts!

Me too! No more house to look after.... I've had 4! Divorced twice. Like the feeling that I can change Spanish , or Portuguese or Eastern European home when I feel like it! Ditto having a car. Spanish pensioners travel discounts suit me fine!
