Resident tax
Just been charged for being a non resident on my property, never had this before, is that a brexit thing, enlighten me anyone please, so annoying when you have no control, cheers
It is quite normal to pay this tax as a non resident, usually paid in arrears. Nothing to do with Brexit we paid it when we first came to Spain a few years ago and didn’t at the time have residency.

Are you a permanent resident, or a non-resident whose main home is not in Spain?
No, I'm not permanent, but will be next Yr,so I assume I won't pay it next year then, I no the banks take money out, and some have to fight to get it back, bought it Iver 2 yrs ago but this is the first time this happened, that's why I'm asking, thanks for replies

Non resident tax is paid yearly in arrears, usually at the end of December. So non res tax for 2019 was due December 2020, the tax for 2020 will be paid December 2021 etc. Always been payable by non residents.
Brexit will cause 2021 bills (payable at the end of 2022) to be a little higher for British residents.

Are you sure it's the non resident tax as it doesn't usually come from your bank account or by direct debit. It has to be calculated on your yearly cadastral value as on your IBI (council tax) and is something either you do yourself, or your solicitor/gestor or a company who specialises in this tax, which is what I have. It sounds more like your IBI. Ask your bank who submitted the withdrawal.

Hi Smoggie,
In addition to Non-resident property tax, which is payable annually, Spanish banks have to declare to the Spanish authorities details of all non-resident clients who hold accounts with them - not unsurprisingly, the banks pass that cost onto their customers. This declaration has to be made every 2 years, so perhaps that's what you have been charged? This happened to us before we became resident - the bank didn't tell us in advance; the first I saw of it was on our bank statement when they debited it from our account. If you have online banking, you can check the transaction details.
Kind regards,
Kim

If you are resident next year then you will still have to pay next year for this year's non resident taxes. Then you will declare for resident tax after that. Its paid in arrear.
