I should cocoa! My understanding is that whoever owns the car on 1st January is liable to pay the full tax for the year. As long as you did everything properly and have the correct documentation to prove it I can't see how they can expect you to pay for a car that is not going to be driven on the road as it has been scrapped. Give Bradley Breakers a ring, they may be willing to give you a bit of advice.

If you scrapped it properly, by using a CAT centre, then they will have given you a destruction certificate (Certificado de destrucción del vehículo).
The CAT centre should also have done the baja online to DGT and given you a DGT receipt proving the baja has been done (Justificante de la baja definitiva en el Registro de la DGT). This receipt is legal proof that the vehicle has been de-registered. It also has a verification number (Código Seguro de Verificación - CSV) that allows its authenticity to be checked online.
If you didn't do the scrapping in such a way, then you will be liable for IVTM for this year, and possibly for years into the future.

Feenix is spot on. I scrapped a car at the same time, just before Christmas, so I didn't have to pay the next Suma.
You should have been given the correct paperwork by the wreckers where you scrapped it.
