I have a British registered car and have been in Spain 6months.

I also have a Spanish driving licence, TIE and Padron, what I’m unaware of is, how long can I continue to drive my car in Spain.

Anyone have the definitive answer?

I am pretty sure its 6 months then you have to change to spanish plates or take it out of Spain someone may be able to give you a definite answer.

Thanks for your reply, Aspen1992.

Is that 6 months in any year?

You see it’s not so straight forward.

It can only be out the UK 12 months so within that 12 months Spain allows 6 months, I would becarefull how long you keep it there as they are clamping down now after Brexit.

I have seen 6 months listed often in older threads on this subject by people who I would describe as very reliable sources.

As you have TIE you should make the swap soon anyway.

Saying that, I have neighbour who has been parking her British reg vehicle opposite the home of a local police officer for 5 years!

This is interesting. I speak and read Spanish so I've had a good look round instead of doing the ironing.

As far as I can see there isn't anywhere that says how long a Spanish resident can own a non-Spanish registered car because the vehicle has to be registered at the owner's address which is in Spain.  From what I've read there's no official recognition that a resident wouldn't register their car straight away. Several websites say one month but I don't know if that's a fact or a general belief.

(Pre-brexit it was 6 months from the date of becoming a resident for eu citizens to change the registration to their new eu country of residence and that's written on the EU website but that doesn't apply now.)

An interesting point. Brexit has changed several things but I don't think I have read anywhere that the laws on registrations/import have changed because of it.

If Bluemoon has been in Spain for 6 months and holds a TIE it would be fair to assume he/she was resident before 31.12.20

In those circumstances a non Spanish plated car should be imported onto Spanish plates within 6 months. I would imagine that is still the case for people who move to Spain after 31.12.20

I think there's official information on this and I'll have a look for it. Meantime here is what AbacoAdvisors say.

Copied from gov.uk.....

Bringing a UK-registered vehicle to Spain

Read our guidance on taking a vehicle out of the UK.

If you register as a resident or spend longer than 6 months of the year in Spain, you must register your vehicle with the Spanish authorities and you may need to pay some taxes.

You may be exempt from some of these taxes. If so you will need certificates of exemption.

Here's a web site you can read.

Read the section "importing a vehicle in Spain"

Hi Bluemoon,

There's another thread on the same subject.  As a Spanish resident, your vehicle has to be registered in Spain.  The key words are:

"Spanish Law states your vehicle should be registered and taxed in the country where you have your normal residence."

Kind regards,

Kim

Yes it is 6months, but not all vehicles can be registered on Spanish Plates ?

I have a camper van which is a 2003 Transit which I converted myself, I have

Been told that I cannot register this on Spanish Plates, so I will probably have too take it back to the Uk too sell it ?

I was told that I could not get an MOT for it but I have found a garage that is

Going too do it for me, but getting insurance seems too be more difficult ?

I had too leave it in Spain from December until my return in May, I was advised

Too get it moved from the road outside my rented property because it could have been towed away by the police ? So the garage has kindly collected it and is going too store it for me until my return, presumably there will be a charge for this ?

But it was a relief too now it’s now safe
