Hello can anyone help. We brought our house in quesada some 18 years ago and now with UK leaving Eu I need to know what to expect. Was hoping to live back in our house but what are the rules now??? We are in our 50s and wasn't planning on work but I understand we have to earn a certain amount now to live there... Is that correct. Any information would be great thankyou in advance

I would suggest that you read as much information as you can.   Try looking at the Tips and Guides on this site, as well as the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain website.   There is also the gov.co.uk website.

To live here in Spain you will need to apply for residency. You have to initially apply to the Spanish embassy for residency. You will need to prove that you have an income of around €24,000 plus another €6,250 for your wife. You both will need full private healthcare paid for a full year.

Hi Jo,

As you don't plan to work in Spain, your route to residency here as a Third Country National would be via a Non-Lucrative Visa.  This has to be applied for at the Spanish Embassy in the UK.  If granted, the Non-Lucrative Visa lasts 3 months and 15 days, which it's anticipated will give you enough time (pre Covid!) to travel to Spain and make your application for a Non-Lucrative Residence Permit.  The first permit lasts 1 year, the first renewal lasts for 2 years and the second renewal lasts for a further 2 years; at that point, you'll have accumulated 5 years' residency, which gives you the right to "Residencia Permanente" and no need to make further permit applications.

I think Steve has given you the financial requirements for 2020 - IPREM increased at the beginning of the year and the combined amount required of a couple from a Third Country is now a little over €34,800.

Kind regards,

Kim

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thankyou so much. No we are not Irish. Do you know how long we can stay without being a resident and do we have to have a certain amount in our bank.

As I mentioned further up these comments:   Try looking at the Tips and Guides on this site, as well as the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain website.   There is also the gov.co.uk website.

As the UK is now not in the EU it is classed as a Third Country place.

Hi Jo,

There's no problem with you living in your Spanish house, it's just that the rules for UK citizens being allowed to do so got much harder on 1 January this year, when the UK finally left the EU and UK citizens became Third Country Nationals.  Even as a Non-resident, you'll see changes in things such as your Non-resident tax which, for UK citizens, has now increased from 19% to 24%, and additional charges for transferring money from the UK to Spain.  Depending on how you pay the utilities for your Spanish property, you may find that they no longer accept standing orders from UK banks.  All "benefits" of Brexit.

How long is it since you stopped living in Spain?  I assume you had residency when you lived here, but as it was only for 2 years, your residency would have expired after you had been out of the country for 6 months.

Kind regards,

Kim
