Whilst I appreciate that the Pandemic is the most important topic at this time, I would be interested to receive any theories or ideas why a lot of shops that stock English Groceries have now got empty or nearly empty shelves/freezers? It would be easy to be blasé, and just blame Brexit, but that kicked in almost 8 weeks ago! There are no reports on TV of queues at British ports, or British trucks being held up on this side of the Channel (I appreciate that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any), but even allowing for that possibility, surely some traffic would have crossed during those 8weeks. Please don’t accuse me of looking for only British goods, they are only a minor part of our shopping, most of which is done happily in Spanish Stores. However, I do feel sorry for those Brit-owned businesses, who, when you ask reply: “we haven’t had a delivery for several weeks” and don’t appear to have been informed when the next one will be. Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

From what I have been told its become a nightmare for the British exporter at the border with the Red tape that's become increasingly involved including extra expenses since Brexit and some exporters have stopped exporting to the European markets. Other exporters are arranging to have their goods exported through companies in Ireland who still have access to the EU markets. Eventually everything will smooth out and regular deliveries will come.
Our local Iceland is having similar problems.

Went to the Overseas supermarket today in Torrevieja and the stocks were very poor.

The UK company that owns Overseas (stockists of Iceland and Waitrose products) and The Food Co. (stockists of Tesco products) currently has 17 lorries, full of stock, sat at Spanish border controls in Santander, Bilbao and Cartagena. Many UK companies shipped nothing to Europe in the first week of January and many others faced such long delays at European ports, they had to return to the UK.
Just because Brexit issues have been pushed out of the UK media by Covid-19 doesn't mean there are no Brexit issues. To suggest that Brexit can't be blamed for these issues is to fail to understand what is involved, e.g. 6 days' notice of the terms on which UK suppliers could export to Europe; 6 days and even now, less than 8 weeks to read and understand a 1,246 pages Trade and Co-operation Agreement, plus dozens of annexes and hundreds of guidance notes; failure by the UK government, at least during BoJo's tenure, to address the significant shortage of Customs Agents to assist companies with the required, extensive documentation.
If you want to understand what is involved, I'd recommend signing up for email alerts from the Brexit section of the www.gov.uk website. I think it was about 4 weeks ago that I shared with another member that in one day alone, I received almost 400 alerts, the majority of which was guidance notes for how UK businesses should engage with Europe to export their goods. Is it any wonder that UK companies, that rely on trade with the EU, are going out of business..... 😔
Hi Kim,
Well ,that detailed explanation makes my lack of Ginger Nut biscuits (Co op brand) at my local Dialprix, pale into insignificance ha!
Cheers

Hi El,
Even when the wagons arrive and offload their deliveries, I think there are still going to be disappointments because of EU import restrictions, such as no fresh meat products - so sausages, pasties, etc. will be frozen. Personally, I'm trying out recipes for lemon-crust chicken breast! 😄
Take care,
Kim

I also went to Dialprix in Benidorm and their shelves are well stocked except for tins of beef Broth and tubes of spread cheese!!
It's an excellent supermarket though..😁

Benidorm Iceland has been full aswel or atleast each time I've gone in for my marmite. Only thing that i seen a shortage of was crisp brands because i really fancied some McCoys but overall still had full shelves. Although im not looking forward to the possibility that it may become even more expensive very soon

Yes I heard a rumour that our Benidorm branch was due for a price rise, ugh! The problem is that when I go there for 4 specific items I always come out with 12 items 🤔😁
I'm due to have a trip there on Monday so if anything seems untoward I'll report back.
