You need to go to the town hall to do that, they will point you to the relevant office.

It depends on what your situation is but take with you a copy of your deeds or rental contract, NIE, residence certificate, passport and a recent utility bill and that should cover it.

Be warned for those who have kids you will need to have their birth certificates or family book translated officially into Spanish so that will turn something that should cost you nothing into a thing that could cost lots.

Hi

Thanks for the info. We have only lived in the property we have bought for a month so have no utility bill yet, could this be a problem?

All done now, registering with the padron was easy, next step residency but that may prove to be a little more complicated

Hi Jill/Steve.  I read somewhere that to register on the Padron you need a "baja" - a letter from the UK Consul confirming you are no longer a UK resident?  I'm guessing false?  Cheers, Steve

Hi

All we needed was UK passports, NIE documents, documents proving we owned the house and a utility bill in our name

The british consulate no longer provide this service of issuing a Certificate of Baja Consular, I think they ceased doing this in 2013.

You can print a copy of the following letter and present it to any official department that asks for the certificate. You do have to provide an alternative.

British Consulates in Spain no longer issue the Consular Letter: Transfer of address for importation of vehicles/household goods/change of registration plates (also known as the Baja Consular).

You can provide the following documents in place of the Baja Consular:

  • work contract or proof of self-employment
  • a residence permit or work permit for the country you have been residing in - if you’re coming from outside the UK

If you don’t have either of these, contact the Spanish state tax administration agency(Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria/AEAT).

If the tax authorities insist on a letter from the consulate, you can print out the Communication Baja Consular and show it to them.
