Military plane

I know that the air force have to train their pilots and that they are told where to fly by the large airports, but why every morning when we are having breakfast on the terrace do they fly overhead (I know they are probably miles away but it seems so). They fly quite low so that we can see the colour of the plane and then they rise and turn off the engine and glide for a while until the plane splutters back into life and they have lift off. Last week we had 2 planes and later on only one.
I am writing this at 10am and they are gone until later today when they return. I am just commenting because I know there is nothing anybody can do.
