Hi, before Brexit my mother used to send me food parcels, things like OXO cubes, curry powder, chili powder, etc. Thompson's tea bags, which are my favorite. There was never an issue.

In January this year, she sent me another parcel, it contained OXO cubes, beef and lamb, some curry powder, and some chili powder, plus a few chocolate bars.

In March, 2 months later I received a letter telling me that a parcel was being held at customs that contained prohibited items and would be destroyed if I did not send documentation confirming that it was a safe product from a trusted source. I sent a reply, but yesterday 3 months after it was posted from the UK it was delivered back to the UK.

I can buy all of these products in the shops in Spain, so why are they prohibited?

Has anyone else had similar issues?

Brexit is the outcome that just keeps giving :-)

Hello

I havent had an issue with food but .....all items posted from the UK are subject to VAT & Import tax ,  this is from Jan 2021 - post brexit.

I will give you an example - In 2022, I  ordered a football shirt from the UK €58 & paid €24.50 in charges to collect it from  the Correos. I  knew before I ordered ,so on that occasion I didnt mind but on smaller food items the cost would make posting  things  from UK prohibitive & cheaper to buy here.

Cheers

In a nutshell, post Brexit it's just not worth having ANYTHING sent from the UK, unless you enjoy interminable hold ups, lost parcels, red tape, taxes and customs charges.

All the foodstuffs you list are readily available in Spanish and British supermarkets in Spain, apart from Thompsons tea bags which I've never heard of, but the British supermarkets stock dozens of different tea brands.

It seems incredibly quaint to have food parcels sent to you like we're living in some remote African village in the 19th century!

I would think that the reason your items were prohibited, despite being easily available in Iceland is that firms/ supermarkets will be buying from suppliers shipping in bulk and all the necessary and onerous permits, agreements etc will have been dealt with officially. A smallish personal parcel from the uk, despite containing products ‘ permitted’, without the correct import licences is simply not going to be allowed through Customs.

Last year, I sent for £123 worth of food with £40 postage.

It was held up in customs in Madrid airport and I never saw ityand lost the money to a crooked British company who knew I would not get what I ordered.

Part Brexit, part Gibraltar, the Manuels are giving us a hard time and refuse to allow all foods, etc.

I spoke to a manager in Iceland about it and she said they have to disguise foods and such to get them through customs.

The place I miss now is Ex-Pats outside Benidorm which has lots of things you do not see in Iceland, Food Co (Tesco), etc.

Do you really believe that nonsense?

Well put it another way - how long would a registered company last if they deliberately disguised products to evade Spanish customs taxes and duties?

Aitch.
