The Vecinos of San Miguel are coordinating a campaign to stop the  proposed gypsum (plaster) mine which will be over a large area of land near to San Miguel.

A meeting was held today at Puerta del local de la asciacion de vecinos in San Miguel in which we were all asked for our help to stop this. They are all volunteers and need as much help as they can get.

There is only until the 16th October - NEXT TUESDAY!! - to ensure the protest is officially logged to ensure the investigation pre mining does not go ahead. If it can be stopped at this stage it would be preferable and also have more chance of stopping it.

A protest is being held in San Miguel starting from the asociation, which is on Calle 19 de Abril , no 47, this coming Sunday at 12.00 - it is so important for the protection of our area that as many people as possible attend and sign the petition and also make our local representatives from the council and regional government aware of the strength of feeling against this mining.

If it goes ahead there will be blasting on the surface, dirt, dust, an incredible amount of lorries and associated traffic which will not just affect the San Miguel area. Tourism is likely to be affected, house prices will definitely be affected and there will be compulsory purchases of property within the areas where they want to mine. The dust and dirt may well affect your health. Definitely our right to a peaceful home life will be affected. So far there is no idea which ports the lorries will use, Cartagena was suggested, but for convenience the company involved will surely want somewhere nearer.

We are also in an earthquake area - what effect will blasting and mining have on our safety and our property? There is bound to be an effect on the wildlife and birdlife within our areas. There are so many implications and this is why we must all do our best to help the organisers of the protest before we find that it is too late .

I have no wish to be alarmist but this isn't going to go away without our doing something about it. Lets all write to the local newspapers - ok then, email! - our councillor for the environment and lets ensure that our local mayor comes out in public and states his support for his neighbours who are the people he represents.  I am going to try to find email details for him, the environment councillor and anyone else who needs to be aware that this is not what we want and we expect our representatives to fight hard for us to make sure it does not go ahead. If you know these details please put them on here and then we can all contact them.

Please tell everyone you know about it, make sure your neighbours know and try very hard to turn up on Sunday, don't lets leave it until its too late - you know what they say about people power!!

We shall be there. Also handing out leaflets in San Miguel market tomorrow and attending the meeting at the town hall tomorrow too hear their thoughts on the subject.

I do not arrive in San Miguel until 18 October. Is there an email address that I can send my support for the cause you are informing everyone about?

It is unlikely that i will be able to make the meeting but i would very much like to email somebody of importance who is dealing with this to express my objections, should an address be provided.

I have asked for info on an email address for Regional government but in the meantime the Town Hall gave me this address - [email protected] for email to the Mayor.

I am presuming this will need to be sent in Spanish, so google translate but this usually has some imperfections so I will ask the association if they are able to provide a template letter for us all to use. I don't have an email address for them as they are private individuals so actually have to go down there between 6pm and 8pm. If you are able to help this would probably be the best way to contact them at the moment. There is a facebook page but I don't know what it is called I'm afraid.

Just out of interest, what is the correct building to go into?

If i put Calle 19 de Abril, no 47 into google maps i get a tobaconist. If i do a 360' there is nothing that looks like an official building of any sort.

Thanks

Newish to San Miguel so not sure of how to describe it but its on the street behind where the Spar is. There is a piece of waste ground which people park on adjacent to it and you walk into a covered area and its down there. Doesn't look very official though!

If anyone can explain where it is better please help!

going from the small roundabout at the petrol station end of the village - take the 4th road on the right (Calle Jesus?), 1st right and you can then see where the association building is ahead of you- park on the left and walk into the underneath of the building.
