Any ideas on how to go about getting a replacement and how much it costs?

Many thanks

Thanks

Spanish licenses don't have a separate number like UK ones. They just have your NIE number, with a hyphen before the final letter.

As well as Jim, who is a ‘mine’ of information, you may like to have a look at the N332 site for anything to do with driving in Spain.   It is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

So the document number for my drivers licence should be my NIE number?

Do you know of any company that can do all this for me as although i could probably deal with going to the police station in Orihuela myself (i think that's the nearest one), i do not fancy driving to Trafico in Alicante. I have been there a few times with people and the roads are mayhem plus parking and finding the place would cause me issues.

I don't know anyone in your area who could do it for you.

I agree that you don't want to voluntarily go to Tráfico in Alicante, but Elche is easy to get to, easy to park at, and it's a much more modern and nicer office.

Having said that, I've just looked at DGT and they must have very recently changed the procedure, as you don't now need a denuncia.

If you've got an electronic certificate you can apply for the duplicate online. You can even do it by telephone, so if you've got a Spanish speaking friend then that would be the way to go.

The new procedure is described here:

https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/permisos-de-conducir/duplicado-permiso-de-conducir/index.shtml

You can change the language to English. This is only done using Google Translate, but I've just run through it and the translation seems OK.

I have to say that DGT are these days making several things a lot easier to do, and I'm impressed.

I'll update my guide when I've time.

I've not yet finished delving for information but, although it doesn't seem to be mentioned by DGT, you can also get a replacement by going to a post office. You pay a handling fee but it would save a trip to Tráfico:
