I am posting this on behalf of a friend of mine who is currently in Torrevieja hospital having had a stroke. She is 67 years old and a resident of Spain with TIE/SIP card etc

When she comes out, she will need , I suspect , a certain amount of support and care on a daily basis. Is this something that the state cover in Spain , or will she have to pay for it privately?. She does not have a great deal of money

Also , if the state does provide, do the hospital liaise directly with the Spanish social services to arrange this ?

Lastly , I have heard that the UK government may provide financial support towards this care as she paid into the UK NI system for some significant time prior to residing in Spain

Thank you

It's usual in Spain for the patients family to organise private after care, it's not usually provided by the state.

There are many home care companies in that area which some are English.

Hourly rates are around 15 - 17 euros per hour which includes full care as required plus chores in the home etc.

It's possible to obtain help from the UK government for carers services and Help international might help with any form filling etc. It's tends to be a long drawn out procedure and hospital paperwork will be required.

Here is a link to a carers company:

In my experience aftercare/physio is prescribed by the patients own doctor not the hospital.

Has she got an S1 from UK, without that I doubt they will offer any help.

Your first port of call is the Social Worker attached to the hospital ward that your friend is in at the moment. They should be be able to help you. There is a social worker attached to every public health centre who should be also to assist. Obviously you will need to make an appointment with both.

The only UK benefit i know of that your friend may be entitled to is Attendance Allowance providing they were officially resident in the EU before 31 December 2020, as they will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement and the following link will provide you with further information:

Age In Spain is also a good source for advice and perhaps be able to sign post you to other organisations. Please click on the following link for further information::

I'm sorry to hear of your problems, dont worry The Social services are excellent. They will arrange nurses to come and look after you and clean and cook if needed. There are many ways to access these services, but the town hall social services is probably the best way. As sk for an appointment with Marina the boss of SS, you may need a translator. You start with lots of forms and documents to get, it's the same world over, but follow her instructions and they will be very helpful. Good for helping your friend, it will work out, they are very good I'm smds
