There are several things that can affect the cost of private health insurance, such as age, pre-existing conditions, and the level of insurance purchased.  It's worth noting that basic cover is not sufficient for residency applications.  My husband and I, 63 and 61 years old respectively, for mid level cover with no pre-existing conditions, pay €1,780 per year with ASSSA - that's for both of us, not each.

After your first year of residency, you could switch to the Convenio Especial, which is usually cheaper than PHI, at a cost of €60 per person, per month.  However, at age 65 this increases to €157 per person, per month, so it really depends on how old you are now and at what age you will retire as to whether the C.E. works out cheaper overall.  Another benefit of the C.E. is that it doesn't exclude pre-existing conditions, although you will have to pay for prescriptions, whether you have PHI or the C.E.

My husband and I have insurance with ASSSA.  We have a plus cover which costs us 1180.00 euros each as we needed that for our residencia application last year.  We also have dental and accident cover on top of that.  Its not cheap but you don't always get the best cover with the cheaper ones and some want co-payments if you claim.  ASSSA premiums also don't increase with age other than the tax that increases which only adds a little to your policy each year.  We are approaching our 2nd year now and I looked around but we decided to stay with ASSSA.  They speak good English to.

We are also in the process of getting our residency.   We used ASSSA.   They are very friendly, speak good english and have an office at La Zenia which is convenient if you need assistance.

Haven't had to use facility as yet, but hopefully will work well.

We got a recommendation from our Gestor who's helping us get the residency, for a health insurance broker who came back with a quote today for €1,515 for both of us, mid 50s and mid 40s. It's Salus and everything in English. Not interrogated what we get for that yet...

That's a good price for both of you.  Just check how much it will increase per year as you get older.  Ask them for a quote for you if you were say 60, then you xan see if it is worth taking it.  Check as well that the policy covers enough for your residencia application as they need to see you have good coverage for everything and not the basic cover.  Your gestor should know if the cover is enough.

Thanks for that, good advice. We actually already have private health insurance  from Ireland that covers us for Spain but the Gestor said, as it had several excess to be paid elements, that it wouldn't cover us for the residency application, as had to be able to pay for everything we may need in full, so think it should be fine but will double check...

An important factor to look at is: How close your gp(medico de familia) with the company is to where you live.

Not a lot of good having reasonable charges without a doctor nearby.

I heard of a case where the person's insurance assigned doctor was 40 kms. away. Not a lot of help.
