Hi We are moving to the Santa Pola/Gran Alicant area early next year and we are looking for a school for our daughter 14, currently in year 10.  Do you have any tips for schools where they do GCSEs or are very good at integrating older English-speaking children.

Personally, if possible,  I would wait until your daughter has finished her exams. It's very disruptive to move schools and move country (particularly iwih the language problems-unless your daughter is fluent in Spanish) during this important time.

Unless children are very young when they come to Spain it is difficult for them to learn the language and integrate into the Spanish life. Many young people end up in low paid work that they would not tolerate in the UK and some decide to go back to the UK, which often causes a delemma for the family. Best to think of these situations and know or think how you and she would deal with them.

Agree with Jan. Pulling your child out of school and taking her to a foreign country at the most important part of her education is I am sorry to say ... irresponsible.

Even if you put her in an international school at a cost of 750e per mth it will still be too damaging for her Education

You can redo years in Spanish schools which is quite advantageous as my daughter one of the youngest in the year in the UK and redoing year 10 should help her confidence being a bit older and ahead. It would also mean starting at uni just 19 rather than 18. Her brother at uni in the UK has found it quite difficult as also only just 18. We will see. She is very keen to go but obviously realities different maybe. All hinges on house sales in the UK.
