Get your Irish Passport ASAP just as thousands have already done, if the worst happens as far as Brexit is concerned you will still be an citizen of the EU.

Yes, although Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom the Republic Of Ireland has never gave up its claim to all Ireland, under international law this entitles those born in Northern Ireland or of Northern Irish descent to Irish citizenship, dual nationality and both British and Irish Passports.

I'm in the same position as you except I have the beginnings of my maternal family tree, 4 generations so far. I don't really want Irish citizenship I just, selfishly, want an Irish passport for my freedom of movement.

I'd really appreciate it if you could keep me posted.

TIA

Gina

Hi Andrew , as stated by Pete, in certain cases ,an applicants entitlement to Irish Citizenship can be based on a Great Grandparents Irish Nationality. I think the parents of the Great Grandchild ( applicant),must have Registered prior to the birth of the Applicant.

Interestingly, in the 12 months prior to the Brexit Referendum, there were slightly over 25,000 applicants, by Britons ,for Irish Nationality. In the 12 months following the Referendum the applications total had risen to nearly 64,500 Britons.
