I am looking at the areas around Santa Pola and hoping for guidance from those who know the area well.

Coming over for viewing trip in October to look at potential holiday home (already have NIE from previous property owned in Malaga region) and future permanent residence (Spanish residence Ok as I will meet the criteria)

I have travelled Spain quite a bit and now looking at Alicante area for a change of scene, better transport links from Uk and flatter than Andalucia.

I have decided to concentrate in the Santa Pola area because of its proximity to the airport (I don’t want a car or have to hire one if possible).  I like the sound of Santa Pola because feedback I get is in summer crowded with Spanish tourists (I won’t be there high season) and other times a good mix of cultures, maybe a bot sleepy which is perfect for me as I want to start practicing Spanish again.

I am looking for an area that is low rise, preferably with bungalows or villas and good flat’ish walks with some greenery in the background. Good bus links to the beach, Santa Pola centre and commercial areas. Good community feel where single people (late 50’s early 60’s) don’t feel left out.

I don’t go to estate agents on first trip, I stay in the area, walk a lot, try out restaurants / bars, use public transport etc to find the right area then come back and view properties so that don’t waste peoples time going to areas I don’t like.

The areas I have seen online are La Marina and Gran Alacant, I would appreciate pointers on areas to concentrate looking in.

Many thanks

The best time to look is November to February. You need a lot of time and oersistance.

Thank you.  My time is not that flexible but will be coming over a number of times within the Schengen rules.

More interested in hearing about different areas to concentrate on in my limited time.

We followed much the same thinking as you in moving from a hillside town in Andalucia to Santa Pola in 2019. We spent a hectic couple of weeks looking at numerous apartments (wanting a 'lock up and leave') and are delighted to have bought in the Gran Playa section of Santa Pola itself. Easy stroll into the town centre, bus and taxis to/from the airport, a couple of hundred yards to the beach, walks both ways along the coast and up into the protected reserves behind.

It is quiet out of season though can be very busy during the height of summer (which we normally try to avoid because of the heat). It is very Spanish but some expats and English is widely spoken. La Marina and Gran Alacant have large expat communities and so have many more low rise.

We have found that a second floor apartment in a 3 floor block suits us very well. Stairs are easily manageable (and we've seem to have manhandled half an Ikea store up them!). Secure enough not to be a worry when we are back in the UK, especially during lockdown.

We'll be around in the first half of October if we can help at all.

Thanks so much for this helpful reply. And even better having someone who came from Malaga area. I owned in  Nerja for over 20 years, took the opportunity to sell at the height of the market last year but missing Spain so much decided to get another property where I can practice my Spanglish.

The more I read and hopefully more replies like this will show me my first thought Santa Pola is right for me.

I was looking at Tamarit as will need a house because have family member in wheelchair.

As long as there is a Mercadona in walking distance, a port / marina and traditional bars I'm a happy bunny😃

I agree with Steamboats that you may wish to start your search in the Gran playa to TamaritPlaya Lisa area of Santa Pola itself.   The former  will find you closer to town and amenities including the bus station with Tamarit  being one end of the town limits. Avenida Salamanca has a lot of houses running the length.

Your other place to look would be Bernabeu , Veradero & del Este beach areas running at the totally opposite end of town . There are some “urbanisations” along this way with houses.

There is a little urban bus that runs a loop from one end to the other via the bus station, should you not fancy a walk.

Santa Pola does get quieter in winter but never lifeless …always things going on in the central areas

We have been in Santa Pola since 2004 and love it to bits. It started due to my partnership  with a Spanish property Agency in Elche; now retired and honestly, can’t fault the town and the incredible facilities, restaurants etc.

In all honesty, we found Santa Pola disappointing. Commercial, charmless, grimy. There may be attractive areas, but the central part is very much a working area. Nothing wrong with that, far from it, but not a tourist destination. I recommend nearby Gran Alacant any day of the week.

Thanks for your honest opinion.

It is helpful because I don't want a too touristy area and the more I can integrate into the local area the better.
