Hi has anyone applied for their NIE number online prior to moving out to Spain and if so is there a reliable site to apply via. Thanks in advance.

I obtained mine via the following link, and then a visit to the Spanish Consulate, (not Embassy), in London. Take an umbrella and warm clothing as it will involve standing in a long queue for ages on the pavement outside. Cheap as chips though. http://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/LONDRES/en/Consulado/Pages/NIE.aspx

Yes, we obtained our entirely online - apart from a necessary visit to a notary public in our local small town. It wasn’t particularly cheap, but it meant that I could arrange everything from the convenience of my own office and computer, without having to waste time, money and effort travelling to inconvenient embassy or anything else.
I think the outfit we used was named something similar to NIEonline, but don’t exactly recall now. The entire process was simple and pain free, all the paperwork being completed online through a series of simple forms. They emailed us a copy of the resultant NIEs and when our abogada required the originals, they were sent to her directly via registered post.
Would certainly use this I system again - the main objection to it that I have seen would appear to be the fact that they dare to charge for providing a service. Would I prefer it to be free - of course. Do I resent them charging for their work - no. It saved me a tremendous amount of hassle at a time when I didn’t need it!!!

Hi thanks so much, I had a previous response but when I checked the link it was for non residents. I will have another look on line. I am at a very early stage of moving my house just gone on the market, but wanted to start and make some plans.
Thanks again xx

But if you are still in the UK then you are non-resident!

So what happens when you actually move over, reapply!

No, once you’ve got an NIE, you’ve got it. Don’t confuse it with ‘residency’.

Once you have an NIE it is yours for life, similar to the UK National Insurance Number - there is not just one for resident and one for non-resident. It will be used on many things such as Driving Licence and Tarjeta de Salud (in Alicante Province your SIP card).
