Hi, we are coming out to Santa Pola early February, wonder if anyone can recommend someone that can keep us straight applying for our NIE and ultimately residency, basically guide us through the maze, i am aware its supposed to be simple but on reading up it appears to be anything but simple, also we have been told there is a 2 to 3 month wait for NIE appointments, can anyone confirm if that is correct, the whole idea coming out next month was to get our NIE prior to brexit and 29th March, is there any way to get an NIE appointment faster, any help appreciated.

It's easier and quicker to get an NIE if you can get to the Spanish consulate in London or Edinburgh:

Hello both, we used Uma at getlegalinspain.com. She is Spanish and speaks perfect English. She is based in Torrevieja but she met us wherever we needed to go for appointments.
Can someone with more knowledge please comment re getting the NIE before March 29th as I thought it was the Residencia that was important before Brexit. I understood the NIE is basically a list of foreigners here for 3 months whilst the Residencia is acceptance that you reside here permanently and have proved you have the means to do so and may or may not be the paperwork to give some protection post Brexit.
I am more than happy to be put right on this!

You're correct. The best-case scenario is that anyone with legal residency at whatever the cut-off date is should be able to swap residency for residencia. If someone has an NIE but not residency, the NIE won't be of any help.

Thanks to all that have replied, very helpful, for info we tried Edinburgh Consul but their first appointment is middle of February, London consul has plenty open appointments so we might end up going there though its a distance from Aberdeen.

Hello again, I am still concerned that your timescale for wanting to get the NIE before March 29th means you believe that this will afford you some kind of right to become a resident after that time. Getting an NIE won´t make any difference to your ability to get Residency now or later, but you will need one to buy a property. Depending on agreements on Brexit, or extra ones specifically between the UK and Spain, you will either have to qualify under the existing rules as an EU citizen, existing rules for a non-EU immigrant or somewhere inbetween.
Please note Jim Taylor´s post.

Getting the NIE and buying a property in no way guarantees you will get accepted as a resident.

Update, Thanks again to those that replied, we are now sorted as the Spanish consul in Edinburgh have arranged an appointment for us this month

even though their website said the first available appointment was mid February, so we are sorted for now.
