Hello everyone,

Looking for general opinions and advice if that is ok?

Our mum and dad are looking at retiring to live in Spain, Sax in particular, what is this area like?   We are currently doing research on the area as we would probably be 12 months behind joining them.   We are a young family with 3 children,  3, 5 and 14.  I have no hesitations that my 2 younger children would adapt very quickly.   Concerns over my 14yr old education,  assuming I would need to find an international school????  Are there any close to Sax or would we be looking into Alicante.

What is the job opportunities like for this area and most likely Alicante, my husband would probably have no specific qualification for Spain,  however I own a childcare business,  which I wouldn't be able to bring with me but I do have lots of experience and possibly a tefl certificate.

Thank you

This may come across as unhelpful, but when it comes to people chasing dreams in Spain honesty is the best policy.

Virtually no job opportunities will exist if neither of you are fluent in Spanish.

Any jobs would be low skill low pay 5e per hour. You would be very lucky to get one of these.

You probably wouldn't earn enough to cover.

Your rent

Healthcare Insurance

Cost of schooling

Cost of living

Don't do it. Stay in the UK for the sake of your 14 yr old. Its too much of an important time in their education to come over here with such a little chance of success.

Hi

I would echo 271935

Your parents retiring, Sax is a nice town with expats they could make friends and enjoy the lifestyle.

For yourselves however, even if you are highly skilled you are unlikely to get a job without speaking Spanish and before a Spanish national, unemployment is still high here. A job in Alicante? Maybe, but as was said low wage, long hours and travelling there and back everyday with petrol costs, would be far too much. Also remember families look after their own here, children are often looked after by grandparents while their parents work, whilst grandparents are looked after by their children.

Schooling, international school in Alicante and costs a fortune. Local schools, your 14 year old would have to go down at least a year, maybe 2, to enable them chance to catch up and learn the language. They may well find that difficult, lonely and isolated.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but as was said it is best to be honest, I would say now is not the right time.

John
