Evening all. Can anyone help me here please ? I am looking to hire a small, 2 door 4 seater, car for a fortnight in August. Flying into Alicante and staying in Torre de la Horadada. I don't possess a credit card and have no intention of getting one either. Any place I have looked want to put a hold of €1100 on my debit card but I think that's lunacy. I have a car hire excess policy from home that covers me to drive in Europe and gives very good cover, but they still insist on the €1100 deposit. Has anybody any thoughts on how to overcome this ? It adds an extra €600 + the €1100 deposit, to the cost of our holiday which is not practical for us. We had hoped to visit Cartagena, Benidorm and La Zenia Boulevard, Dos Mares, we have two 15yr old girls with us, and the markets and take casual drives but this is making a mess of our plans. Cancellation or deferral could be one of our options, alternatively a good inexpensive reliable taxi firm...?

Thanks for your help.

Alan

Your car hire cover is ok & will hopefully get you your money back in the event of a mishap or a spurious claim if you run into one of the more unscrupulous car rental firms.

They won’t want to see it when you arrive at their desk though. It won’t be any use to them as it only covers you. You pay the damages & your insurance reimburses you. That’s why they put the hold on credit cards. Some can be €2,000 or more. Taking a rental with the firms along with their own full excess cover insurance will mean you pay more but need no card. The only deposit they take is if you do a full - full on fuel where they block the price of a tank of fuel usually around €80 or so.

The Companies that operate in this way tend to be the ones based at the airport.

If you can find a smaller independent Company they tend not to block this large amount on your credit  card.

For instance, I have just used Magnum who were excellent, they meet you at the airport with the car.

Having said that, car hire this year is much more expensive than I have ever paid in the past 20 years, apparently there is a shortage of cars at the larger operators due to the pandemic, this then has a knock on effect and uses up any capacity at the smaller independents.

If you use the search facility at the top of the page and use ' car hire ' there is a good chance that posts will come up with recommendations of more of these smaller Companies.

Lara Cars at Alicante Airport and La Marina Urb. No excess, no deposit on your card. The only extra is a tank of fuel. They have the car at arrivals when you land, very little waiting time.

Where not simply have a credit card for car hire.

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/

If you do not want the full use read and benefit from the use, in these purchase protection is the best.

I remember when a shop went bust and people had paid by cash, they could see through the door of the closed shop the product they consider they had purchased only to be told - no you are a creditor.

There are reasons to use a credit card, it would in the UK better be called a Consumer Protection Card with credit facilities, I think the protection works all around the world not just in UK.

You have a lot more protection that using Cash or Debit card, you can repay in full even before statement and still get these protections.

I've never had that issue. I went paid cash with centauro and never had any bother, same with enterprise, hertz and avis
