We are in the process of changing our Driving Licences from UK licences to Spanish Licences. Also our Residencias. We still however own cars in the UK, which are taxed and Insured there .

Does anyone have any information or experience of this situation and what the legal implications are regarding Insuring and driving a car in the UK once Residencia and Driving Licence changes are completed.

We are Spanish Residents with Spanish licences.

We have a UK address and cars.

Our UK cars were/are insured with Admiral.

When our changes took effect, my wife phoned Admiral and explained. They issued a change notice on the (multi-car) policy .... "change of licence". So we seem to be OK.

But another member of this forum has indicated that she tried the same thing with Admiral, and was rejected.

On a partially related point, we rent a flat out in the UK. We have non-residents' landlords insurance. When our policy came up for renewal a few weeks ago, our broker (A-Plan) warned us that they might not be able to renew again next year, due to Brexit. So things seem to be getting more difficult - I assume insurers are considering the costs and deciding if the business is worth it.

Back to cars/licences .... with Spanish licences, you can drive your own UK cars in the UK, but you can't drive your own UK cars in Spain.

You can drive your own Spanish registered car in the UK.

Edit ... Liberty Seguros (a Spanish Insurer) will insure your UK-registered car. We did this with 2 UK-plated cars that we brought with us to Spain. We stayed with them after the cars were re-registered in Spain.

A UK car driven in UK must be insured in the UK with a member of the MIB (Motor Insurance Bureau) but they all require you to be UK resident.

Clearly then as a Spanish resident you cannot legitimately pass that fundamental test.

I don't know what Kelvin1960's wife told Admiral but I suspect it was less than the whole truth.

Driving in UK with a Spanish licence is perfectly fine.

Excuse me ... we told the whole truth !

My wife is the lead name on our multi-car Admiral policy. Accordingly, she made the phone call; I was sitting next to her.

It is sad that, with no insights into our personal circumstances, and having never met my wife, you have chosen to attempt to discredit her in this way.
