Any increases in beer and food prices would be in line with other local bars as they are all experiencing the same problems so yes in the end the customer has to pay more.

People are also customers of the Electric, gas and food outlets who are paying and will have to pay more.

The difference mainly being is customers can choose to either go in a bar/restaurant or not, you really don't have that choice with Electric etc suppliers.

Not significant in itself but I regularly buy President Brie in Consum and it has increased from €2.78 to €3.48 over recent weeks.  The prices of food and clothing items seem to be quietly creeping up.

. I understand you to be implying that the bars are pocketing the price increases personally to fund their lifestyles? I doubt very much that this is the case, they are suffering from increased supply prices, which include unseen charges to them; ie the cost of transport which is affected by fuel prices, the cost of raw ingredients to the manufacturer etc etc. Whilst it is very tempting and easy to accuse bars, which are small businesses, of profiteering, I would be very surprised if this was the case. They also have increased direct expenses to their business, electricity and gas for a start.

I don’t think anyone thinks businesses of whatever kind should not make a living for their owners!

Tracy....No-one has suggested that there will be an increase of €1 a pint......where did that come from?

Small to medium family bars are struggling this year with the aftermath of covid, price increases etc and far less holidaymakers coming to Benidorm and the rest of Spain due to several factors including exchange rates, vaccinations, added paperwork and other requirements etc.

I would not go there again, €1.50 a pint nearly everywhere away from the front. Often €1 a pint in uncle peds.

To add to the reply from Steve, this being Spain, we don’t normally buy beer by the pint in this area. It is usually bought as a Cana (sorry, no accent!) being approx 330 ml or roughly half a pint for 1.50 euros, sometimes 250 ml. So 3.50 Eu for the equivalent of some 600 ml, whilst slightly more expensive, does not seem outrageous?

So I don’t see this as profiteering. And if this is a bar near the ‘front’, thenI would expect higher prices, this is usually the case everywhere.

But how much was it 6 months ago. Prices vary by region and by bar anyhow, it's the increase that is relevant. Sounds like Benidorm is the place to drink though.

Interesting - and shocking - exposé on "Panorama" documentary this evening regarding UK's energy pricing crisis.  Christine Farnish, non-executive director of Ofgem, has resigned because of the failure of her colleagues to protect consumers in the current price increase crisis:

https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/christine-farnish-resigns-from-the-ofgem-board#:~:text=Farnish%20accused%20the%20regulator%20of,(Gema)%2C%20Ofgem's%20board.

I was shocked to hear from another member that the UK government, having approved on 11 July, a 25% windfall tax on oil and gas producers in the North Sea, hasn't actually enacted it yet?  I guess, with the summer recess starting on 22 July, perhaps there wasn't enough time before BoJo and his cronies got demob happy for their summer holibobs to apply the tax.  Supposedly, it was intended to raise £5bn in one year to help people struggling with their soaring energy bills - the CEO of Shell even said they'd be happy to pay it - so why the delay?  How does the UK's absentee government think people are managing in the meantime?  Makes €3.50 for a pint of lager in Spain seem irrelevant.

Hi Kim,

looks like the BBC have got you worked up somewhat!

The 3.50 euro may seem irrelevant in the UK but it is relevant to those in Spain, which is what this thread was discussing.

AS you probably know, the UK government put in place a £400 rebate for every household to offset the energy cost increases announced earlier in the year, this £400 starts being given out in October. The government has been working on a further assistance package for several weeks. I don't think it will be a surprise to anyone that the announcement has been timed with the new PM being in place. The next round of energy increases start from October, hopefully a package will be in place before then.

Don't you think it's a bit naive to expect that billion's in windfall taxes would be recovered within a few weeks? The process will have been put in place with the tax authorities and they will be dealing with it. I doubt Boris and  his cronies, as you put it, will be going around collecting it personally, though if you see him leaving number 10 today with a large sack..........................
