Hi Painterman,
The response will be different depending on what passport you hold - UK or EU? If UK, you need to apply for your residency in your home country before you move to Spain. If EU, both NIE and residency can be done here in Spain.

When you get here, it's a simple process to obtain an NIE at your nearest National Police Station; similarly, as an EU citizen, you can apply for registration on the Foreigners' list at either the same National Police Station or Foreigners' office. You don't need a lawyer to help with this - a good gestoria will be much cheaper.

The gestor that I recommend is Uma Sanz of Get Legal In Spain, but they're based in Torrevieja, so I think you'd be better starting a new post asking for recommendations in your area of Torre de la Horadada. If you include it in this thread again, the only people who are likely to see it are those of us who have already replied.
