Hi

I currently live in England and I have a repeat prescription for my thyroid treatment every 2 months. I usually have to have a blood test every 6 months or so just to monitor whether or not the dosage needs tweaking. If move to Spain on a permanent basis, do any of you good people know how or what I would need to do to maintain same?

Regards

Pete

My wife had her thyroid removed in Spain in March. The clinic is monitoring her levels with blood test etc,all seems fine.I must say from first bringing it to Doctors attention in September 2021 to operation in March 2022 the service was exemplary. We are covered by private health as not old enough to benefit from joining Spanish public health system and have to pay for prescriptions etc.Wife will be 66 next year and can then join public health.

Thank you very much for your rapid response. I think we need to consider private health insurance when we eventually get there. Both me and my Wife are over 70 years old, but fit apart from this thyroid issue. We are currently going through the process of obtaining our Non Lucrative visas. Thx again

I am not up to date on NLVs, but at 70 years of age you may find getting PHI difficult or expensive, also it would/might not cover pre existing conditions. British citizens who are state pensioners who are entitled to healthcare from the UKs NHS may transfer their rights to free healthcare to Spain using the S1 form available to UK state pensioners to access the Spanish healthcare system, as said the S1 is available to those who are in receipt of a UK state retirement pension and wish to live in Spain should contact the UK healthcare team on 01912181999. Good luck and I hope it helps. Ps to register for Spanish healthcare the documentation required is passport, tie residency card, local Padron Certificate, S1 registration form.

Hi Peter

Thank you so much for your reply. Everything you mention is very very helpful to us both. We have applied for the S1 certificates and we are currently waiting to receive. Once again thanks for your invaluable advice.

Regards

Pete

We are both over 70 and we do have entitlement to Spanish health care. But for various reasons I looked into obtaining PHI as well, as at the time one of the companies was offering a very good deal, DKV the German outfit, I think.

They would insure me, but would not touch my husband with a barge pole. He has nothing dramatic in the way of medical conditions, simply fairly common problems for men of his age, completely controlled by drug treatment and with no further effects.
