Once again, the Processionary caterpillars are here.I found 3 nests in a small pine tree today, where many people walk their dogs.

If you arer not aware of the potentially fatal result of your dog sniffing, licking or eating these insects, read on.

The Processionary caterpillar is the stage of transformation of the Pine moth. It lives in cocoons, or nests, in Pine trees, and they start to appear as early as January, but this year, are already here. They live on eating the Pine needles, and venture out of the nest they create in the Pine trees here. They emerge during the day, and retreat back to the nests at night, until they suddenly leave the nest, and are either blown off the tree, or walk down the trunk to the ground. They are covered in tiny, but deadly hairs, which they can eject like a porcupine's needles, when alarmed or molested.THE POISON IN THESE CREATURES, AND THOSE HAIRS, WILL BE FATAL TO YOUR DOG IF IT SNIFFS, LICKS OR INGESTS EVEN A FEW OF THE HAIRS, RESULTING IN NECROSIS OF THE FLESH WHERE IT TOUCHES THE ANIMAL WHICH DISTRESSES IT. IF YOUR DOG DOES COME INTO CONTACT WITH ONE, YOU MUST GO STRAIGHT TO THE VET, AND HOPEFULLY THEY WILL SAVE YOUR PET. IT FREQUENTLY REQUIRES SURGERY TO REMOVE THE NECROTIS, OTHERWISE IT WILL RAPIDLY SPREAD. PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON...I WAS VERY WORRIED WHEN I TOLD NEIGHBOURING DOG OWNERS/WALKERS, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW.

dogs :D In a 'dog park' in La Florida.ORIHUELA COSTA. BUT...these caterpillars are not exclusive to any particular area in most of Spain. The only requirement is Pine trees. And so, keep a close eye on what trees are in your walking area, and keep your dog on a lead, so you can control where he/she walks. I would never recommend allowing your dog to wander free if there are Pine trees around, especially between now and March. You can see the nests quite easily, hanging from the branches...but they will walk a long way away from the Pine tree they inhabited, when it is time for them to bury themselves in order to change into a moth. They are virtually imperceptible when they are walking through grass etc., but when they emerge onto roads/pavements etc., they walk nose to tail in lines sometimes as long as 10-20 metres. There can be up top 300  in one nest alone. You should report their presence immediately to the GuardIa, who are OBLIGED TO ATTEND, AND REMOVE THEM. As to whether they will, is another matter ;)

Why would anybody search for something they don't know exists??? I drew attention to the dangers, and supplied very informative links. And at the time when these insects start being a danger.

Hi, in answer to your question together with your useful links, after 20 years of living among the pines, the more people are aware & how forum members have had experience with these pests, the better.

I don´t understand your quote, ""Why would anybody search for something they dont know exists???", but thanks for your very good information.
