Look at the online accounts offered by Cajamar and CaixaBank.

Where is the bit about financial hardship? I thought I read it carefully. Don't know anything about the UK banking or Post Office system.

Yes I suppose there are accounts out there ok but I was surprised that the banking system here in Spain is so different to the Irish one.  Changing an account there is as easy as changing your car insurance.

I don't think that's correct. It's an account that would be used for Basic banking like direct debits and standing orders. No overdraft. A debit card is available on it too.

They did not refuse to open one for me.

What they said was that it if I changed my account all my direct debits and standing orders would be cancelled and it would be up to me to reinstate them with the relevant companies.  I was surprised  at this as I assumed it was standard practice in Banking to do that.  I was not going to move my account from Sabadell just change the type of account.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'll leave it as is for now.

Thank you. I think they are really taking advantage of us all. It's present reprehensible practice with the banks here & it's beyond me how they get away with it !

Thank you for your advise & I will look into it  straight away. Hopefully others will switch too as & thwart them for being so greedy 🤞
