Santander banking

Hi my friend who is a non resident of Spain has a Santander bank account in which he only has set up to pay bills by direct debit..he wishes to close his account as he has other options to pay his bills for his Spanish home...is this possible without pen6and how can he go about getting his monies out so as to close it...thanks in advance

Hi there, I think the best idea is for your friend, or you, to ask this question at his branch of Santander.

Hi Gaill, I was in the same position as your friend just over a year ago. I was fed up with the high cost of running a current account with Santander and  the lengthy queues at the Bank. I transferred all my direct debits to Wise, and once I knew they were all being paid I went to Santander and at the cashiers desk requested the closure of my account. No questions were asked of me (customer for 30 years) and I handed over my debit card and was paid out in cash my balance minus a few euros for their trouble. Take passport and NIE for identification. Best thing I've done in years and gave me great satisfaction. All the best, Pete.

Yes I agree - whoever your friend is going to use to pay their direct debits make sure they are correctly set up.  I slipped up with SUMA payments one went through ok but the 2nd was not collected adding charges to my bill.  SUMA were fine to deal with over the phone from the UK and I soon got everything working.

And as for the satisfaction of walking into Sabadell to close the account (we needed an appointment btw)......great !

We now use N26
