I'm likely to take the plunge and switch from Sabadell to Hola Bank (Caixia).   I have appointment with Hola on Monday next, and assuming all goes well, I'll switch them.  The fees appear essentially the same for Hola as for Sabadell, but is there anything to be aware of like a notice period for Sabadell?   I usually transfer funds from IRL via N26, both Euro accounts, and this is a fee-free transaction. I'm leaving Sabadell as I feel they have somewhat less than fair in an insurance renewal issue.

As a by the by, does the new bank simply transfer all DD's or do I do this myself?  My solicitor's also have PoA for fees and taxes, so I know I probably need to square all that with them.

Here is a link to Hola fees for those interested in it. https://www.caixabank.es/deployedfiles/particulares/Estaticos/pdf/HolaBank/20210203-HolaBank-EN.pdf

I dumped that Caixa account after fees kept being applied for no apparent reason and I wasn't prepared to pay through the nose for one of their policies in an attempt to reduce fees. It was difficult to close without being there but managed it. See no real need for Spanish account unless you are resident. I now manage all my DD's and other transactions through Transferwise. Why can't you use your N26 account?

Hi, I suppose I just might be able to do that. I was concerned about problems paying bills, community fees and taxes. But maybe that's not such a big issue.  I'll consider it.  I did sign up my DD for BB to N26 with no problem at all.

There should be no issue if your account has an EU IBAN

We’ve always had an account with La Caixa. So far, very few problems. Their app is very efficient and as nearly everything can be done online there is little reason to need to visit them. Like all Spanish banks, they make a charge for receiving money, and for any individual payments to firms one may make online, but I am afraid this is only going to increase as they are all losing money.

Technically there is no such thing as ‘free’ banking, it is simply covered in other ways, lower interest rates for example.

If you have an N26 account already (presumably with an IBAN that does not begin with GB), then why not utilise that account for all your needs in Spain?

Unless you have a desire to have a branch network or some non-standard banking needs, then N26 should work for you in my opinion.

Can you close Sabadell online or is it in branch.

As I had moved all my direct debits over, I asked Sabadell how I could close the account on Twitter.

They passed my contact details onto the local branch where the account was opened and I received an email from them advising that to close the account (due to the COVID situation), I needed to arrange an appointment to come into the branch.

The account was opened in Los Alcazares as that is where my solicitor was based - which is in Murcia - and with regional borders closed I told them that I wouldn't be able to travel to do that.

They therefore passed my details on to the La Fuente branch who contacted me - they told me I didn't need an appointment to attend that branch and that I could come in during their opening hours together with ID to close the account which I duly did.

So mildly long story - but to answer you specific question - no, I think you (or someone with PoA) needs to attend in a branch to close the account.

Hi George, I will eventually live in Spain, so I would prefer a Spanish account, but  N26: might Indeed be an option as I already bank with them.
