Does anybody watch catch up TV on a computer?  I have been doing this for about a year on itv essentials but they have now switched it off. I get it that it is because I am in Spain and have looked into it. Apparently I can get a VPN but haven't a clue what this is. Does anyone else watch TV on a computer and if so how do you access this. Or is this something I just shouldn't be doing?

Thankyou

Josie.

Hi,

A VPN stands for a Virtual Private Network which makes everything you do on the net private. It has many benefits for the security of your private data along with giving you the choice to connect to servers anywhere in the world. This ability to connect to a server say in England gives you the ability to appear that you are actually in the UK and as such you would be able to access things that are only available to people in that country ie UK TV programs, however some apps including chrome can still see your actual location. I would suggest perhaps using another browser like opera etc. I would suggest paying the nominal subscription rather than using a free one if you plan using it long term as the speeds are better and their connections are more reliable. I hope this helps

TVcatchup.com

Has the basic channels, live stream.  No VPN required

A lot of the providers can now recognise when a VPN is being used and block it.

Our son in law came to see us in France and watched British tv using an app he'd loaded called mobdro on his tablet. It doesn't work on Apple, yet, but might be worth a try

Josie.

No problem Josie, I'm glad I could help.

There is also another possible solution to geo-restrictions and that is called smart DNS which is faster than most VPN's but ultimately the choice is yours. I've added a site that you could try as it has a free trial so you could see if it works for you for free before making your mind up. https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/

I have also added a link to a web page that explains a little more about the differences between smart DNS servers and VPN's that I hope will help: https://thevpn.guru/how-bypass-geo-restrictions-location-errors/

It is worth noting that geo-locking is a big battle being fought by the TV service providers at the moment and as others have mentioned some vpn dns servers are being blocked, however, the companies that supply the services soon have updates to get around the restrictions. You can also switch quickly to another solution yourself very quickly at any time.

Alternatively, as mentioned by others there are other solutions out there for android tablets like mobdro for live tv or Terrarium TV, freeflix, showbox and the obvious Kodi TV which works on both windows and android, The choice is yours. Good luck :)

Regards

Garry
